On Saturday, a childhood hero of mine - David Rocastle - died of a form of cancer. He was 33.

My best friend's dad also died from cancer a few years ago.

I also fear cancer because, though I've never smoked, I grew up with two parents who were heavy smokers; my mum has since given up, but my dad continues to smoke reasonably heavily.

Now all of us with PC's or Mac's have a chance to assist in finding a cure for this disease.

Go to this URL:

...and download the software. It runs in your computer's spare cycles and analyses potential cures for cancer.

All other relevant info can be found on the site.

If anyone is interested in joining it, I have created a team called 'Special Reserve Forum Regulars'.

Great news, turbo. Thanks.

I have it running constantly on my work PC, along with the SETI agent; it's also on my home PC, but only runs when that machine is on. Once I get my new MAXX PC (most likely the end of June) it should run more often, not to mention quicker! :-)

I feel I should mention that not only have I downloaded this but I paid my mum £5 to let me leave my PC on whilst I am at Work Experience (I'm staying at a friends). I have also got it on my mum's 1ghz (whoa!) and I am going to install it on the school's 30 machines all at 600mhz. So, I have done my bit for the cause

I will eventually get around to downloading to the software. Honest. But I'm usually either at work, as now, or forget all about it.

So remind me if you speak to me on MSN!

I've had my PC since the end of February, and it's got Windows 2000 running on it, so it's never been turned off yet. The only time it comes close to that is if I have to do a Windows Update that requires a reset.

(Having said that, now it's bound to crash.)

But I don't thi

Why does everyone have this fear of leaving their pcs on? My mum always thinks this box will explode if I don't switch it off in the evenings, but I never do - my mate has a 5 week uptime so far, and I can think of one novell server that's been up for 6 years...

'doze is a problem, leave a 98/ME pc on for 4 days or so and it tends to collapse in on itself when you try to do something useful

Am going home tomorrow (well, today i suppose it techincally is now) for two weeks. Cannot leave my computer on non stop for two weeks, so i wont be contributing to the cure finding thing for a while.

Sorry.

Rest assured, when i return, my computer will be on flat out searching for a cure.

The problem most people are finding is turning off their computers and then finding out that the particular work unit they were analysing has reset.

If you wish to turn you PC off, just hit the snooze button on the UD main interface before you power down, that way, when you restart later, the UD program restarts from the last completed molecule, and doesn't have to start right from the beginning again.

Therefore, if you are analysing a particularly complex molecule and are up to 200,000,000 conformers, it's probably wise just to let that particular molecule finish before you power down.

Personally, my PC runs 24/7 so I don't get that problem, the only time I have to be there for the UD program is to hook up to the internet now and again to get the next work unit.

I'm also on NTL - makes no difrerence.

I have left my home PC on overnight twice, as it does take some time to process. I also have my work PC running it, as that is on all the time. I think that may have crashed though, as it hasn't returned any recently - I've been off work ill for the last 2 days (hence very few posts until now), but should be back tomorrow to get it sorted.
