So I'm watching this movie yesterday and at the moment LL Cool J's "Preach" character gets his Zippo lighter out of his pocket, after it has been submerged in water for the past few minutes, and it LIGHTS FIRST TIME, I call out "Oh come on, that’s ridiculous! There’s no way it would have lit on the first spark"

I then paused, turned to my girlfriend and said, “Of course, genetically engineered super intelligent sharks that are being harvested for a alzheimer's cure, that change size throughout the movie I have no problem with *at all*”

What a gloriously entertaining mega budget “B” movie (contradictory I know, but it cannot be anything other than a b movie at heart.) In the same vein as “Deep Rising”, this movie may be silly, it’s science might be totally far fetched (“They SWAM BACKWARDS!!!!”, erm, a physical impossibility), it might be crappy and idiotic, but its fun. All it really wants to do is impress you with its special effects (partial success), frighten you (close to total failure) and gross you out (bull’s-eye).

Most of all though, its just plain and simple damn good fun.

No, It wouldn't. Jaws deals with the effects of a killer shark on the tourist town of Amity, and the efforts of the sherrif to get the "evil capatalist" to believe his that there is a threat. They hunt the shark and kill it.

If Deep Blue Sea didn't have Aquataca or a similar setting, the film wouldn't exist as it deals with genetically engineered super intelligent sharks and said sharks attempting to make a break for the open sea.

I see parallels between this argument and the 28 days later one.

There's a fine line betweem paying homage to something and twisting a new plot to incorporate the best bits of other films. It seemed to me like they just re-did jaws making more sharks that are a lot stronger, faster and smarter to add an extra fear factor. They killed them all though in the same way and if it wasn't for Aquatica it would all be set exactly the same way as the Jaws films.

Not a chance. I own Zippos and the seal is not watertight. Zippos are reliabily windproof yes, water proof, a big no. ;)

?!?!??! Its NOTHING like Jaws plotwise (well, the kids at the start could be argued), apart from the fact sharks are the main characters. It ackowledges Jaws and pay homage to it however.

The licence plate he removes is the same one Dreyfuss pulls out of "Little Shark" in Jaws, and the way the sharks are killed mirror Jaws 1,2, and 3 respectively.

Number one gets blown up in a gas explosion.
Number two gets fried with electricity.
Number three gets blown up with an explosive device.

Fun, Fun, funfunfun.

Actually the zippo lighter lighting first time may not be so far fetched. Provided the lid was properly closed of course, they are famous for their reliability.

Do you mean when she was standing on her wetsuit and she chucked the electric wire into the sharks mouth? I didn't think that would be dangerous to her because her shoes were rubber and the wetsuit was all made of synthetic rubbers and other non-conducting materials that wouldn't conduct either.

If you are meaning something completely different though please correct me heh:D

I saw this featured on that bad science program. The bit they focused on though was when the water was all electric.. apparently that wouldn't be dangerous at all.
