I then paused, turned to my girlfriend and said, “Of course, genetically engineered super intelligent sharks that are being harvested for a alzheimer's cure, that change size throughout the movie I have no problem with *at all*”
What a gloriously entertaining mega budget “B” movie (contradictory I know, but it cannot be anything other than a b movie at heart.) In the same vein as “Deep Rising”, this movie may be silly, it’s science might be totally far fetched (“They SWAM BACKWARDS!!!!”, erm, a physical impossibility), it might be crappy and idiotic, but its fun. All it really wants to do is impress you with its special effects (partial success), frighten you (close to total failure) and gross you out (bull’s-eye).
Most of all though, its just plain and simple damn good fun.

I was also pleased to see the woman get eaten at the end.

If you read my justification for saying that bellow you'd realise it quite easily could be done without Aquatica however it would be almost exactly like Jaws.

Goddamn Cubist, you are dumb.
Exec. Producer: For our movie why should these sharks be in captivity?
Other Producer: Um, how about for research purposes, something scientificc?
Exec. Producer: Yup, yup, I really like the sound of that, how about having some Water research place in the middle of the ocean, Waterworld esque?
Other Producer: I like the sound of that but what are they studying the sharks for?
Exec. Producer: Simple, how many sharks do you see getting the Flu?
Other Producer: Err, none I guess but I don't think a cure for Flu sounds believable.
Exec. Producer: How about alzheimers?
Other Producer: I suppose, I've got a dentist appointment in 5 mins, that'll do
Exec. Producer: Excellent! How about a twist, instead of normal sharks how about we make them bigger, better, stronger, faster we have the technology. We can say its because they've be enhanced so that the sharks have more juice for the alzheimer's cure?
Other Producer: Just whatever. I'm away to the dentists
Exec. Producer: Don't worry it's in the can, just get some actors to ad-lib their way through the movie, get the computer guys to do their magic and we'll have a hit movie, Oscars here we come
*This may or may not be exact quotes from a possible meeting regarding the Blockbuster (was that a great show or what) Movie Extravaganza that was "Deep Blue Sea"

It's been a couple of years since I saw this, but don't the wee guys in the film comment on that with bewilderment, and put it down to their genetic mutation?

I was exactly the same.
It was totally out of the blue really, if you excuse the pun.
There's this whole, I dunno, expectancy if you like, that in a movie, the bigger names never seem to die midway, or near the beginning, of a movie.
But that added a nice touch to it.
It's a good film in my opinion.
Maybe a dodgy plot, experimenting on sharks, and they go all super intelligent, but it ends up working out alright really.
If only because when Samuel L Jackson gets eaten, my reacion was "What the f...?", about 4 seconds before a character onscreen said basically the same thing.

The woman who secretly genetically modifies the shark throughout the entire movie is doign it for medical gain at the expense of the lives of other people just like that evil capatalist is willing to run the risk for personal gain but both at the end realise the sharkk has to be killed.

It easily would, have you seen any REALLY old films in which entire cities get attacked by giant squids from the deepest depths of the ocean. No one quite knows how it existed for so long without them knowing so they just say it has been hiding in the deepst depths of the ocean for millions of years. Well they could have done the exact same with the sharks, a newly discovered breed of super predator living at the bottom of the ocean only to be unleashed recently upon a group of scientists who want to catch them for medical research. It could easily have been done without Aquatica except it would have been too like Jaws.

He digs his own holes.
