Cross-trainers are indeed good, especially if you have one with all the settings for inclines and such.
I would say without a doubt the hardest workout that I fit into my week is my circuit, 1 hour of non-stop pain.

That depends what sort of shape you're in and how fast you run. You can't hope to burn off much more than 500/hour if you're weight lifting, which you can beat even if you're only running at around 5/6mph. Any faster and of course you can burn off a lot more.
Still, I reckon the best calorie burner is the cross-trainer machine. You can easily burn over 1000 calories an hour on that.
