I have to say it has become a marketing mans dream. Why should we need a special day to tell our partner we love them? I could get her flowers and chocolates all through the year, but if I don't on valentines day, then she's not happy. I don't mean my missus specifically, just women in general....

All of the above. a) Its been celebrated for centuries, but b) the marketing element is fairly recent, and c) if you don't worry about it while you are in a relationship, then you will be out of it in a short time ;)
