------

I'm damn pleased to see Johnny Depp nominated for Best Actor.I seriously hope he wins, it's about time something like this got recodnized in the Oscars. His peformance in Pirates was indeed fantastic.

I still think Cold Mountain should've been nominated for Best Picture though, but it's nominated in quite a few other catogories so I'm sure they aren't too dissapointed. Also, there's the absence of Nicole Kidman in the Best Actress catogory, which I thought was kinda funny. Bet She's peeved though.

Lord Of The Rings *again* steals the show with 11 Nominations (I think), including special effects. I really think T3 or one of the Matrix sequels should've been nominated for that, as they had many more consistently good special effects shots.

Overall though, pretty interesting set of nominations.

Yeah, but he always acts quirky. Its just this time he's in a mainstream movie. Still, he was gloriously entertaining to watch. And yes, there will be a second. I don't know the sub-title, but know gore Verbinski
, Depp and Bloom will be returning.

But Johny Depp! He deserves to win, that must have been one of his highest performances he has ever done in Pirates of the Caribbean. It must be pretty hard to act in that crazy manner, whilst being funny at the same time all the way through the film... Do you know if there is going to be a second Pirates of the Caribbean film?

Nah, Murray should get it, not matter how much I despised "LostIn Translation", but best supporting is Ken Watanabe, guaranteed.
I did start writing a list of predictions and reasons why, but realised I have better and more constructive things to do with my time. ;)

Here are my predictions, if used for betting purposes I require 30% of all winnings as payment.

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Johnny Depp - PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

It would be a crime not to give him this award but after Peter Jackson was passed up for Best Director at the Baftas I wouldn't be surprised if he did not get it.

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Tim Robbins - MYSTIC RIVER

Tim Robbins was brilliant in Mystic River making me really care about his character and all that was going on in his psychy. I was, to be blunt, gutted when "Dave" was killed at the end for a crime he did not commit. He definitely deserves this.

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Samantha Morton - IN AMERICA

She was brilliant in it however I was expecting Scarlet Johanson (sp?) to get a nomination for Girl With A Pearl Earing or Lost In Translation. If she did get a nomination it would be her but as she didn't it's Samantha Morton.

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Renée Zellweger - COLD MOUNTAIN

She won the Bafta and for all of you who saw Cold Mountain I am sure you'd agree she delivered a surprisingly brilliant performance deserving of this award.

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
FINDING NEMO

No Spirited Away? Well I don't really care about this one as all the films nominated are for ages 5 and up. If I had to guess I'd say Finding Nemo as it's the only one I've seen.

ART DIRECTION
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

Come on need you ask?

CINEMATOGRAPHY
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

Enjoy it, it's the only award they're going to get.

COSTUME DESIGN
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

Once again here's an award I'm sure they'll gain.

DIRECTING
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

And another one.

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
I haven't seen any of these films however if Touching The Void was there it would win.

DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT
Not seen any

FILM EDITING
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

Another for the pile.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
Not seen any

MAKEUP
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

Did you see Johnny's mascarra? Masterful, *cough*

MUSIC (SCORE)
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

I get a chill up my spin whenever I hear it, it HAS to win.

MUSIC (SONG)
"Into the West" - THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

Once again they grab the gold.

BEST PICTURE
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

I think this will win although I wouldn't be surprised is someone with a twisted sense of humour let Lost In Translation win. I've seen it twice and it's great but TLOTR:TROTK is in a league of it's own.

SHORT FILM (ANIMATED)
Not seen any.

SHORT FILM (LIVE ACTION)
Not seen any.

SOUND
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

Yup they'll win it.

SOUND EDITING
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

Go on they deserve it.

VISUAL EFFECTS
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

I think TLOTR:TROTK will win this however the skeleton pirates in Pirates Of The Caribbean where created using CG that had never been used before so they may win it for that.

WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY)
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

I'm getting real tired of predicting this film will win.

WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY)
LOST IN TRANSLATION

Yeh it deserves this, it really is a brilliant script mainly because it has very little dialogue to it. A lot is done through masterful shot choices.

Have the Oscars already been on TV? I hate missing these! There was one on the other day, but I think that was the BAFTAS.

American Splendor! Yes, glad to see it got at least one nomination. Can't help but feel that Paul Giamatti deserved one for his fantastic lead performance though...
