I’m just interested in finding out peoples thoughts on the subject. Not just surgery but “beauty” on the whole.

I was thinking about it the other day, (don’t know why), and there is a program on channel 5 at the moment called, “Drastic Plastic”, which reminded me to write a post about it.

I’m not talking about plastic surgery for those that have been disfigured in such a way as it was out of their control. I’m talking about cosmetic surgery for personal gain.

A while back it was frowned on a little by society and it would be rare to come across someone who had, had it, and even rarer to come across someone that would admit to having had it. So, as society finds these things more and more, “acceptable”, and access to different levels of “self improvement” becomes more widely available, where do you all see it going?

You don’t even have to go under the knife these days what with botox and the likes. People seem to be undergoing medical procedures more and more often in search of the unattainable perfection that is thrust at them every day on TV and in magazines.

People will say, “I’m doing it for myself not anyone else, I’m doing it because I’m not happy when I look in the mirror”. Why aren’t they happy? Is their unhappiness not due to everyone else?

I personally dislike cosmetic surgery with a real passion. I like my women natural and unaltered, even heavy make-up is enough to put me off.

I know what I’m about to say is focusing on women and I know men tart themselves up too, but women have more tricks up their sleeves. Push-up bras, stomach and buttock holding in pants…it’s not fair, it’s false advertising; you just don’t know what you’re getting anymore. It’s like that Christmas when you were a kid. You see your present under the tree and it all looks so promising, but when you unwrap it you find yourself filled only with disappointment.

So in a world of nips, tucks, lifts and reshapings, what are your views on all of this?

Oh, I would like to add one more thing though. Cliff Richard has botox treatment; you don’t want to be like Cliff, do you?

I don't really see anything wrong with plastic surgery. If someone wants to take care of the way they look, why shouldn't they?

I'm not a believer in the school that says 'you should be happy with the way you are'. That breeds complacency. People should always be looking to improve themselves. Vanity, provided it is not strived for the the extent that other things are neglected, is a virtue and not a vice.

I'm not saying that plastic surgery is a good option in many of the occasions where it's been used, but in principal it's fine. People are always going to make bad decisions, but that's their mistake and not the system's.

I was overweight as a kid, (12-16), it affected my confidence and all that, would I have wanted some quick fix? Absolutely, I would love it if someone could click their fingers and fix all my problems rather then me having to go through all that exercise and dieting to achieve the god-like physique you all now no and love…

Absolutely, peoples lives can be ruined by things which we may think are trivial. Having a large nose for example can make a person so self conscience that they dont want to leave the house.

I think people have it done just because they can these days. 50 years ago people had to make do with what they had, and I believe they had stronger characters as a result. It seems to me that people are far too willing to jump under the knife just because they are unhappy with their life.

Yes. Some times i think about having a boob job-though i know i would never have one. i do believe that it will make me feel better about myself. When i get up in the morning and i got mascara under my eyes and greasy hair and i smell i always feel bad about my self, But once i ad a shower and gor dressed and put a little bit of make up on i feel much more better about my self because i look better. This is what plastic surgery is like.

On the other hand, we shouldn't rely on how we feel about ourselves on things we can change. I said before that i would have a boob job is anything but i know i wouldn't because it dont make me feel *so* bad about my self that i want to hide away. We (as the human race) should start going to see a psychologist before surgery because the way we see ourselves is a lot different to how other people see us.

In conclusion, surgery will make the patient feel better about them selves, but it's more of a psychological issue and therefore that should be delt with before any surgery is considered!

It's all a big bag of vanity if you ask me. if it's necessary due to some disfiguring disease, then fair enough, but doing it because you are unhappy with your looks is narcissism spiralling out of control.

Very true in the respect of that it should be available, but do you really think that the surgery will truly make a person feel better about themselves?

It is my own personal view that it may in some cases only make things worse. During the run up to the surgery a person may begin to think that soon everything will be alright, but after the surgery is over and they haven’t attained the “ideal” what then?

I think plastic surgery should be available to everyone who wants to have it. If someone is really unhappy with the way that they look and they have the money to change that, then who am i to stand in their way?
