"The Conkers backlash has begun in the USA with many stores
refusing to stock the title due to it’s adult content, even thought it has
been labelled as Mature with an ‘M’ logo on the front of the box. The
box also carries the message "ADVISORY: THIS GAME IS NOT
FOR ANYONE UNDER AGE 17" on three different sides. Still, the
moral majority have latched onto a new target and Many
newspapers have run negative stories on the game. One such item
from the LA Times on March 7th quoted a mother comparing
Nintendo selling Conkers to "Disney releasing pornography". There’s
nothing like America’s white middle class moral standing is there?
Meanwhile, Major game retailer KB Toys has stated that it will not
stock the game in any of its 1300 stores across the nation or it’s
website. The media hysteria over Conkers Bad Fur Day has been
fuelled by the game’s violent and sexual content, as well as the
swearing and gore it contains. Which, even we admit is too strong for
children but the box has been labelled very clearly, stating that it’s an
adult game. So what exactly is the problem? Go figure"
I say, FM old chap - you are a jolly wag. And a jolly cheeky chappie, too, what?
Anyway, I must be orf now - I really must find Jeeves, as the bowling green needs trimming. Toodle-pip!
Anyone for a game of cricket after tea?
"Hello, THQ? I was wondering if I could speak to Conker, please?"
"No, sorry - he's at lunch at the moment."
:-)
Sorry.
It's price has possibly been pushed higher because it wasn't going to get a European release, so THQ probably had to shell out a fair amout of coin to secure the rights to release it in Europe, so they then have to add on a decent sized margin to make the whole process profitable.
And they have to make it profitable because these days nobody is releasing games just for the fun of it, it's big business. A couple of flops and you can soon end up either going bankrupt, or being bought out.
Now if we're talking prices for GameCube software, then I imagine that Nintendo will be competitive with their own releases, and they will be the most obvious games at lunch.
They're apparently pricing the system comparitively cheaply, as there are no extras such as DVD Players, but the games will have to me cheaper than N64 games if people are to flock to the GameCube in large numbers.
But Nintendo aren't stupid, yes N64 owners are being milked for every last drop of their cash with the last few decent releases, but I'm sure that it's only the big Nintendo fans that are standing by their N64's, and they'll no doubt buy a GameCube anyway.
If games on the Nintendo format continue to follow past trends, I don't think GameCube will catch on in as big a way as it could, regardless of the machine's capabilities.
Whether the games are good or not, I honestly don't see "Mario 128" or "Donkey Kong 128" selling GC to the masses. If things do head in that direction, I think Nintendo will have to remain content with their domination of the handheld market and a small niche are of the 'real console' market (for want of a better expression).
And before anyone jumps on me for saying this, remember that I *am* considering buying a GameCube (should the 'right' games be available), so this is not a put-down of the machine! It's simply my opinion, for what it's worth.
One thing that is concerning me is the possible pricing of GC software. With Conker available from SR at £50 - and presumably that has some amount of discount - then what price GC software? Especially with the proprietary mini-DVD format.
I know nothing has been announced yet, and you may say "of course software prices will be competitive", but can we be sure? £50 for a limited-capacity cartridge on a 5-year-old system that can't be bought 'new' in the UK any more is *not* competitive software pricing!
It's certainly deterred me from buying it; I was considering a copy of Conker and a 2nd-hand N64 until I saw the price; I'm sorry, but I refuse to pay that sort of money for a single title.
Before anyone says it... I don't believe that the price is high because of the 'mature' content. Plenty of games have that on other formats, and they aren't priced any higher than other titles.
