Genres. Platform, RPG, FPS, beat 'em-up etc.

Very useful for classification. Helps you find what you're looking for.

Have you noticed that as the game industry grows ever larger, and the whole gaming experience becomes more cinematic, the genres we usually see in film are now also used to classify our games.

We have Sci-Fi games, Western games, Fantasy games.

Of course games were always developed in certain styles, but it's only recently that the fact that it's a sci-fi game has been used as a selling point. Probably because the games are becoming closer in appearance to their movie cousins.

No longer do we hear of a new adventure game, it's a futuristic adventure, a fantasy adventure etc.

I guess this must have something to do with the expansion of the industry and our insistance that everything must fit into a catergory!

I like the fact that games are becoming more like movies in terms of storylines, but the disadvantge of moving closer to movies is the fact that they can only ever end one way, and it's the same every damn time you play it.

Games need to be more linear, so there are dozens of potential outcomes, and not just completing the game with the magic staff, or without, but, say turning on your companions and turning to evil!

Anyway, should the games indusrty try to forge more links with movies, or should they be slowly backing away from it, and do there own thing?

How about Tapper, or West Bank? No depth, but had the feel.

A game with a bar room brawl, one on one gunfights, tumbleweed, and the obligatory cheap pros is what we need. Mind you, that could almost be describing where I live.

Sounds similar to Beach Head 2, now that was a great game, several game modes (parachute attack, knife fight and a few others), two player capability and umm... being really old. The knife fight was most fun because each guy stood on a platform opposite the other and had to throw knifes in a tactical manner to hit their foe without their foe being able to escape, the death bit was great because the guy who just had a knife hit him in the chest made a scream with such little enthusiasm it sounded like he was more bored than in pain. Did I mention the game was at the time of 16 colours? Now that's innovation!

Wild Arms on the PS had western undertones.

Cowboy/western games have always been a bit thin on the ground for some reason (someone update Cliffhanger now!). Though Desperados on the PC looks like it could be fun (in a Commandos style). Isn't there a game called Gunslinger up and coming (at some point) on the PS2?

Anyone of a certain age (ahem) probably remembers that game in the arcade with the two cowboys firing at each other across a wagon (Boot Hill??)?

Thief is a stealth 'em up, which is now an official genre classification used by gaming magazines. (Damn that Thief, Damn it to Hill!)

More and more games are trying to mix and match genres, Battlezone2 was a First Person Shooter Real Time Strategy sort of game, they are also making Real Time Role Playing Strategies.

I'm still waiting for a Western RPG, Fallout was similar except based in post-apocalyptic times. It had a lot of Western elements in it though, it was a great game and so was the sequel and I hope they make another sequel.

In my opinion, the ISP is the best I have ever used. They guarantee 'first time connection - everytime', which they have never let me down on.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
