Since we're the wise old people on the forums, I thought we should set an example to the youngins 'ere and list our New Year's Resolutions.
Also, how about organising an SR get-together some time. The last attempt failed when we found out that paintballing in Autumn would be cold - how about doing something in London - seeing a film and going to the Trocadero - if there is still a big arcade there? Any more suggestions.
Specially-Reservingly,

NB. My resolutions are as follows:
* Become conversationally fluent in Japanese
* Learn lots of Mandarin
* Become a vegetarian - or at the very least, learn a lot of vedgy recipes.

Writen Japanese is hard - spoken Japanese is very very easy - far easier than English
Suprisingly, spoken Mandarin is NOTHING like Japanese... however, the kanji (writing system) is the same (more or less).

Ah, I see! Well, I think the point was that he learnt good Russian while travelling, and Ukranian. So, after I learn Mandarin and Japanese, I'll be able to read many other languages - like Cantonese - and will be able to pick them up far more easily.

"I hate to be a burden, but do enlighten me on, why does he speak these languages?"
Well, I'm not completely sure, but will guess at two reasons:
1) He's a big traveller - decides to just head out to places he's never been and meets people to hang about with there. So, he now has lots of friends in Moscow and goes back from time-to-time.
2) He has/used to have a Ukrainian girlfriend

I hate to be a burden, but do enlighten me on, why does he speak these languages?
I mean, was it down to choice?

I speak a bit of Spanish and a bit of Portugese, as did Algy. Or at least I did then, forgotten it all now. It was me and my sidekick (Algy), hired a car and drove. Mostly hotels or hostels, but the occasional night in the car. Just got flights via the USA. Hired a car at the airport. It all went surprisingly well. Would highly recommend it, at least in the more stable regions, i.e. not Columbia.
La Paz = magnificent.

I wish all dentists were like that.

Fantastic - I plan to do the whole continent one day, but would like to learn Spanish first. How did you find the linguist difficulties? Oh, and were you doing a hotel trip, or a rough backpacking tour?
