If there was this machine, that when you walked into it, it would copy you in every way (physical appearance, memories, emotions etc), but then deleted the "you" that walked into the machine, and let the copy out, would you walk in?

If you wouldn't, why not?

can i get confirmation on what would happen?

If the machine works correctly, what worries do I have? I'm completely replicated. Unless my original is to be disposed of in anything less than a swift and painless manner, I don't see the problem.

So you'd have no worries about "you" being killed off then, and another "you" carrying on in your place?

If there were some purpose for which I needed to replicate myself and destroy the original, and on the proviso that the technology was infallible, and did what it advertised, then yes, I would go in.

You're determined to find a way not to answer the question, aren't you :-)

In which case, I would not go in simply because there is no purpose for me to do so.

IB, for the purposes of this question, you can assume it is safe to walk in there.

Interesting that so many of you bring the argument that an identical copy of you isn't you, despite the fact that it is.

Personally, I just wouldn't go in because I don't trust the technology. Certainly not enough to wager my life on it.

No. Because it wouldn't be ME. It would be another version of me. I wouldn't be controlling it, I would be, for all extensive purposes, dead, since it had deleted me.

Yes, I read that not too long ago. One of the best short stories in the book, in my opinion. It's eternity in there...

On the subject of religion and souls, I'm not a believer. I fully believe that every thought and feeling I have is governed by biological and chemical responses. There's nothing supernatural about it. All the more reason then, for me not to want my brain or body to be in any way tampered with or disintegrated.

My reason for not entering the machine isn't that I believe there's more to me than cells, but precisely because I believe there isn't.
