Frustration occurs when you powerless to do anything such as the flower in Smash Brothers get caught in that and there is no escape. It also occurs when you lose at the same place all the time this usually occurs during pin point jumping scenes.
Unfairness where no matter how hard you try you always lose miserably is also a cause of Frustration.
Do game developers need to do it? Surley there isn't need for perfect jumping scenes. Can they make a section that is hard but still not unfair?
I believe they can. Conker is a killer example although fairly short it is also a nasty frustrating and madly unfair game and trust me it would of been thrown across the room several times befor you finnish and i though Donkey Kong was bad.
Frustration ruins a game. Donkey Kong is excellent but that awkward Arcade game and Stupidly hard missions to finnish in short spaces of time ruined the end of what was my most anticipated game on the N64. Same with No Mercy which is a dream of a game but that deleating problem and the fact you can go about 5 minuites while they pound and constantly reverse your moves made me at times hate the game.
Can Devlopers die down the frustration used in their games could THQ make it harder and less likly to reverse moves making it seem less frustrating?
Frustration isn't healthy. Zelda has never got me frustrated but I wouldn't call it an easy game but a bloody excellent one.
Lets campaign against frustration and the unfairness in games.
Heres to the future
Dringo (Whoknows)
Oh well it could well happen to me at this rate!
Basically, games should have an easy mode and a hard mode.
The easy mode is for people who like it easy going and want to play through the game without too much trouble.
And then the true gamers can test their skills and be challenged by the hard mode.
Goldeneye, for example. Everyone who bought the game managed to get through the "Agent" setting.
And then the true gamers went on to finish 00 agent mode and unlock all the time trial cheats. That way, everyone was happy!
Some people love playing platformers ... otherpeople think theyre annoying...
Part of developing as a gamer is finding out what kinda games your into and what games you'd rather leave on the shelf...
Just like movies... no matter how many Oscars English Patient or Titanic gets, and no mattter how many people tell me how much they loved the movie... its just not for me...
Make your own choice about what games you want to play... just because other people are into a game doesnt mean you have to like it... equally just because your not into a game doesnt mean its pants?!?!
Also doesn't the fact the computer reverses your moves in No Mercy all the bloody time a little frustrating?
Yes games are easy like Conkers Bad Fur day as I said it'll take a weekend to finnish but there is parts (quite a few) Which will cause you to hate the game.
Trust me, the challenge in games is what makes them last. They only game I've found to be REALLY unfair is Perfect Dark, but even then, it makes you think, practice and makes a better player out of you.
Some players like you (and my younger brother) prefer relatively easy going games like Zelda.
Others, like myself, thrive on challenge and getting the full £40 worth of the game.
So...
For people like you they have easy settings. For the more advanced gamers they have the hard settings.
True mastery of a game however, comes in the form of multiplayer, where your opponents aren't restricted by "the same old set pieces" or "predictable AI"
When the Gamecube is released and superfast online multiplayer comes into action. Sniper, Grix, Myself (among various others) will be having heated deathmatches. If you want to stand a chance against the likes of us then you'll have to toughen up to the challenge!
A muscle man gets stronger by lifting heavier weights.
A mathematician gets better by testing his logic.
If you want to become a super secret agent, a WWF champion or a high speed driver you need to take on the challenges.
You can get companies to dim down the AI all you like but it won't help you against the experts.
Practice makes Perfect!
Sheesh! I've gone on a bit haven't I...
