So I'm walking home from my girlfriend's house this morning. It's about 8:45am. The quickest way home is through an old park, which goes by some woods, which are quite big and scary. It's very isolated, yet some stupid lazy parents still let their children go through there on their own. I couldn't believe that someone would be that lazy and irresponsible. The school is a ten minute walk, including the return journey, yet someone would risk sending their kids out (they were about 8 or 9 years old), through isolated woodland, which leads onto a main road. If I've learnt anything about society in the last few years, it's that there are lots of nutjobs - especially in my part of the world. Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman are prime examples of what can happen if you leave children of that age to their own devices.

I'm not getting all impassioned about it, because kids should be allowed and encouraged to play out and explore, but it amazed me that someone would let their kids walk alone through that particular area, when it would only take 10 minutes out of their precious schedule to make sure they got to school OK.

Strangely enough, that's happened a few times to me.
You try to look as un-stalker-like as possible and hope they go a different was to you, but they never do.

Ah, to be a man.

It's a sick world we live in, often when I'm walking home from the shop or whatever late at night/early in the morning, and there is a girl/woman walking some distance in front of me, I feel guilty for walking behind her because of the fact that it is no doubt making her nervous, wondering what sort of lunatic it might be.

It really shouldn't be like that.

Some parents can't drop their kids off, because of the time they start work.

My mum had to work until much later than she wanted because she had to go into work later than others because she had to drop me off at school (and even then, I'd get there like half an hour early, and have nothing to do but wait for my friends)

Not all parents have the luxury of being able to start work when they want.
School starts at 9, quite a lot of people start work before then, and some families don't even have cars.

"they were about 8 or 9 years old"

"They" being the operative word. A group of them. I'd much rather have walked to school with a bunch of friends than be driven there and have to wait outside alone in the cold for 30 minutes before I was even allowed in.

One kid, yes, there might be a slight danger. A group? Most people who have sick intentions towards kids would never try anything when there are more than one or two people, especially on a route to a school. Too much risk of someone else coming along. And there's little chance of getting an entire group of kids to go along with someone.

On a related note, I've just been reminded of this guy in Germany who tried to get us to go into his car, my friends and I were 12, the German kids were about 14. We all just laughed at him, since there were about 20 of us.

Whilst IB may have been partially joking, i would back any party that had a parenting qualifation policy in their manifesto.

Just yesterday i saw a girl that went to the same school as me pushing her child around in a pram. She is 2-3 years younger than I am (im 18) for gods sake. Even worse is the fact that im sure she only had the child at such an early age to get a council house rent free and a whole host of other benefits. The baby probably qualifies for one of those government baby bonds as well.

The country is being overrun with teenage pregnancies, and these children will no doubt end up as hoodlums who like to put fireworks in my letterbox.

Agree with that. Bloody kids.

Don't agree with this. I know and have worked with people who have an IQ lower then 100. They are nice people who work hard and serve a very useful purpose in society.

A high IQ doesn’t make you a worthwhile person.

A tad harsh? Yeah, just a tad...

I may have taken your post seriously, but reading this...

The simple solution?
Anybody that is not a friend of me, or known to me should be set on fire and rolled off the white cliffs of Dover.
Because nobody I know is one of those tracksuit-wearing, alsation owning terrible parents that let little Barry play outside till 11pm.

What galls me? What makes me blood simmer?
My area is rammed with these feral kids out all times of the evening. We're talking 5-10yr olds. Mouthy neanderthals one and all, you can predict exactly where these chimps will be in 10 years.
Yet if one of them got snatched and found in a ditch, I promise you it's parents would be tearfully pleading for it's safe return - yet these people clearly don't care about their offspring.

IQ test.
You get less than 100 then you are rendered and sold off as feed to cows.

A tad harsh?
Not from my side of the world.
We do not need anymore idiots clogging the education system and taking time from intelligent, hopeful kids that want to learn, want to grow into decent adults.
Flush the waste and leave space for the bipeds.

Let these kids wander through the woods monkey_man, no great loss to our evolution should they appear as photographs in the national press 3 weeks later.

Who's gonna see it as a joke when just about every post you make oozes contempt for the human race (or the '6 billion fools' as you like to call them)

Indeed. I thought the more astute people would pick up on the joke with the whole "development institute" idea which, while admittedly a genius concept, is quite radical.

Thank CHRIST for that!!

Personally, I think the whole thing boils down to my favourite bugbear; society abdicating it's responsibilities. Conservatives say that we should be kept on a tight leash in order to make society better. Liberals say more freedoms should be introduced. The former approach is unrealistic as you get a society where the rich are mega rich, the poor are super-poor, and both sides hate the other. The latter is nonsense as it takes no account of the reality of the situation; that some people simply cannot be expected to behave themselves in society.

I tend to think that a mixture of carrot and stick to educate people about the duties, as well as their rights, will be the best approach. However, this will never happen whilst we have governments who seek power for the sake of power.
