The "General Games Chat" forum, which includes Retro Game Reviews, has been archived and is now read-only. You cannot post here or create a new thread or review on this forum.
Over the coming weeks we are upgrading our search engine. It's having a triple destructurisation operation and invisible lurking terms enhancements.
The prize will go to the person who finds the MOST VALID PROBLEMS across our WHOLE PRODUCT RANGE in the SEARCH FACILITY.
If you think you should be able to search on "Horror Movies", but nothing comes up, then add it to your list.
If you think people will mis-spell gran turismo, then add that too - but test it first.
Use short lists if possible but multiple posts will count together. i.e. all your posts on this subject will add up and count towards the prize.
Closes 9 am on April 1st, 2001.
I recommend you read the details of our searching process which you can click to from a link at Site Map. Basically we use the start of a word, so a search on "thunder" will find "thunderball". If several words are combined it must find all.
Plurals will work soon e.g motherboards.
We hope to get a site search included (e.g. free e-mail)
Nice idea pb, I think that could work providing the search was tight enough. Might be more problematic where a lot of results were returned, i.e. it could put some of the popular items way down the list.
I think that, while the idea of producing search results that encompass all products is a good one, the results should be shown in sections that are clearly divided and the names should all be linked (as they are now) to a more detailed product description.
i.e. searching for Batman..
GAMES
Batman - Gameboy Color £33.33
DVDS
Batman - blah blah £12.99
Batman Forever - Blah Blah £12.99
TOILETRIES
Batman Amusing Scrubbing Brush £6.99
I think there should be a fuller description for games and films that haven't been released yet, although I realize that there isn't much time for this.
Also, can't you split the DVD section so that it's in genre groups as well, just like splitting the Games section into platforms. It makes films easy to compare when looking for a sci-fi, Horror films etc. like in the magazine.
Lastly. This is not exactly what you were looking for, but why are 90% of your 2-disc DVDs a couple of pounds more than most of the shops and other online retailers? Gladiator, Braveheart and the Seven 2 disc sets are between £18.99 and £19.99 in most of the shops I've visited.
BUT!!!!!!!!!! what about the game SHEEP?
It includes most of the letters!
> "Computer" should link to the MAXX PCs
Yes - actually it would be good if our MAXX PC's came up on a search for "MAXX"!!!!!
I have just searched for Rare and nothing came up. From here I thought that if instead of putting basic stuff about the game you could have a rundown of the games maker etc...
Example
Donkey Kong 64
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Rareware
Released: 1999
Price: £29.99
(Reddie Clamiable: Yes)
And so on, it would even enable those who are manufacturer concious, as oppose to brand, concious, to search for and select all the Rare games or all the Konami games...Might look pretty orderly too.
It might be good!
