The soundtrack is nothing above poor, and the graphics are vibrant but mostly lack detail. The courses are, on the whole, poorly designed and incredibly short-lapped. There's a distinct lack of options, and battle mode is brought down by the awful arena design and unforgivable lack of bots. The gameplay is generally good, but too slow, especially now F-Zero GX is released.
This seems to mark a worrying trend for the series; this is worse than Mario Kart 64, and that wasn't as good as the original. Even Crash Team Racing, a PSOne game and a blatent rip-off, has better design in some respects. I see no explanation other than the fact that this was rushed out to give sales a boost at Christmas. Oh Nintendo? What have you done?
A shame. But these are first impressions, and I have only played about an hour and a half. Perhaps I'll grow to love it. At present however, it IS good, but only around 6-7/10.
On my first go, I couldn't see why people critiscised it's speed. I hated it's handling, and the powerslide seemed ruined. The first two tracks I span round were completely unoriginal and the seat changing of characters seemed tedious and useless. It also seemed less or more challenging than Mario Kart 64.
Now, i'm completely changed. The handling is incredible, the speed, a tad slow but not dissapointingly slow, and now i've got a hang of the powerslide more (whilst it not being better than the powerslide on the 64) is good enough to apply. The special weapons are excellent, and 150cc is particularly challenging. Whilst i still feel the seat changing is tedious, I have barely had the chance to experience multiplayer, which i'm sure is excellent. I do feel it is lacking options in the single player department. Surely Nintendo could have added a single player battle mode without much trouble. Perhaps even more options like a free roam, a chance to experience all the levels, or even challenge mode, you vs. a bot for intense one on one battles. There is a mild lack of characters, but only by a couple, and it's hard to find a Nintendo character to fill anymore spots (Boo maybe? Kirby? And there were rumours a long time ago about Sonic!). However i feel the slight shortage of tracks is made up for later by a hidden extra.
Overall I nowlove the game, and once the cups are complete, i'm sure Time Trial will occupy for a long time afterward.
this is all
disappointing
And I'd also like to say I just unlocked the all cup tournament, and to get it I had to get gold on mushroom, flower, star and special cups on 50, 100 and 150cc. I actually find this game very hard, it's just addictive.
The part I hate the most, is battle mode, the levels are far too small, and have nothing appealing to them. They could have been so much better...
Personally, I prefer the first game.
Does anyone know when Mario Golf comes out?
> Why is it all the cool unlockable Karts are a bit Sh*t?
Some are good, especially Waluigi's, Baby Bowser's and Koopa Troopa's.
Oh, and for anyone who has played further into the game, do you unlock any more battle game arenas? I really hope so. My opinion of them has not changed - they're rubbish.
:)
> Just completed Special Cup on 100cc... guess who I got :-)
That's how you get the Mushroom Headed Gimp!? Damn you AJ you lied to me!!!
i've completed all star cup in 150cc, and now I've unlocked a new 'mode', so that should keep me going for a while-eo.
Toad and Toadette = best partenership
