How cool is that? All we get is Sci Fi channel (who show films like once every month) and Toonami, which is, generally a load of bollecks in my opinion. Whatever happened to CNX?
Why did Spirited Away take so long to reach our shores?
Anime in the UK generally sucks to be honest, And I hate the UK for it.
Belldandy - Was it you that said Forbidden Planet (In broadmarsh centre) sometimes sell's anime DVD's?
Well yeah 10 years ago anything anime related would fail, but there would have to be a lot more than a few badly made hardly updated fan created anime websites and a couple of DVD releases a month. For an anime fan it sucks to be in the UK ^_^ the manga industry here is a joke thanks to the Americans and there "North American rights mean all english speaking countries right?" attitude.
I think in stores they tend to only buy latest releases and once they're gone they don't bother to restock. Without a magazine with a circulation of say 50,000 telling them that anime is there it'll be left to chance that someone will take a peek at what there is. Although chances are someone already bought it and so wont find it. My town literally has about 5 anime dvds (in whsmith) yet I know of over 50 anime fans and god knows how many more who watch it on tv. That's just wrong.
About ten years ago this Japanese guy set up shop in a town near me, he had the most fantastic stuff - all the latest Japanese stuff, kits, did pre-paints, imported videos...
And was closed within two months. To be honest my usual buying decision for new anime usually goes like this;
Get Newtype USA each month.
Read, make note of new titles of interest.
Hit eBay US for the Hong Kong box set of said series.
Without Newtype I'd have never heard of Kiddy Grade, Chobits, Love Hina, Sakura Wars TV, Full Metal Panic, Witch Hunter Robin, Wonderful Days, Voices Of A distant star and tons more....now imagine if there was a Newtype UK, and those releases were available on Region 2, in the stores.
Perhaps then the shops would take it seriously hardly anyone knows when and what is being released and there always tends to be a delay. Like Kiki's Delivery Service and Castle in the Sky. I'd like to set up an anime shop and sell the several hundred anime titles that are out in the UK (my HMV stocking only 8 of them)
> Serial Experiments Lain
Should have been out over here by now...but it seems to have overshot it's release date for some reason, Play don't even have a new date anymore.
What began as a seemingly great year for anime in the UK seems to be flailing around with no real reason - you could probably shift copies of Spirited Away right now if it were out on Region 2 but anything else... If anything I'm finding it increasingly hard to find anime in the high street stores - MVC seems to have lost interest, a decent eBay retailer of them is packing them in 'cause he says they don't sell - despite his prices being cheaper than Play's. Also noticed Play has reduced it's range down as well.
Still no magazine (we all know the mainstream ones like Empire will forget about it once Spirited Away has gone), plenty of titles supposedly bought up by MVM etc but no actual contracts signed - so don't hold your breath.
I know earlier in the year I said it may be time to ignore Region 1's and Asian imports, but I can safely say I'm reneging on that now.

Strange. Saying it is Top Gun in space is kind of right, but not really. To me it's the kind of thing that makes anime films great. It's a little confusing at first if you don't know anything about Macross, but perseverance pays off. Well worth the money - it's a pity we don't get more Macross releases on Region 2. You should be able to pick one up cheap on eBay if you don't want to risk paying full price, but it is good.
Now Macross Zero.............bl**dy hell it it good :D Sadly it's not even out in the US yet, but Asian capitalists provide ;)
Matters not.
I dont think The Cat Returns will be showing in cinemas, although I have no doubt whatsoever that the final Hayao Miyazaki movie, Howl's Moving Castle will be in cinemas. It's based on an English childrens book so to not give it a big screening would be wrong.
Manga is a term meaning "playful images" that was coined in 1815 by woodblock artist Hokusai and has since come to mean all Japanese printed cartooning, from comic books to graphicnovels. Anime is a loan word that denotes all forms of animation. Since the success of Otomo Katsuhiro's Akira (1988), it's become the word associated in the west with Japanimation. Manag are generic (eg mecha - giant robots; hentai - porn) and are targeted at specific audiences (eg shoujo - young girls; seinen - teen boys), and many of the most popular genres have crossed over into anime, as have such artists as Tezuka Osamu, the so-called god of managa, who devised the 1960s breakthrough TV series, Astro Boy. The two leading anime studios are Toshio OKada's Gainax and Studio Ghibli, co-founded by Isao Takahata and Hayoa Miyazaki, which was responsible for anime's first Oscar winner, Spirited Away.
God I must have so much free time to type all that up from Empire Mag.:S Well now you are all a bit wiser in the ways of Manga and Anime at least :D
