Some anime dvds I own and would recommend:
(* region 1 only at the moment if I remember correctly)

Akira
Castle of Cagliostro
Castle in the Sky (coming soon)
Cowboy Bebop vol 1-6*
Cowboy Bebop The Movie
Cyber City Oedo 808*
Excel Saga
FLCL*
Ghost in the Shell
Grave of the Fireflies*
Heat Guy J*
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade*
Kiki’s Delivery Service (coming soon)
Lupin III TV*
Macross Plus
Master Keaton*
Metropolis
My Neighbour Totoro*
Patlabor TV series*
Patlabor 1, 2, 3*
Porco Rosso*
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away*
Spriggan
Wings of Honneamise*

Some great stuff there. Some of it is only available in the US though, so a multi-region dvd player is essential.
There's plenty of other great titles too, too many really for the power of a mere mortal's wallet.

I've never really watched any Anime or Manga. I saw Spirited Away when it was out at the cinema and that was the first time I'd ever seen any manga anime whatever you'd class that as. I thought it was quite good but in the end I still prefer actual movies with real actors. For example I recently bought the Indiana Jones box set and The Blair Witch Project on DVD. Both of which I much prefer to any anime film.

I suggest:
Neon Genesis Evangelion series + Movie
Martian Successor Nadesico Series + Movie
Excel Saga
Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040
Outlaw Star
Tenchi
Cowboy Bebop Series + Movie

I'm sure there's others but these spring to mind!
I really really suggest Neon Genesis Evangelion!

I don't think anyone else on here reads Manga but me. Although if you have a comic shop near you I would recommend.

Ranma 1/2 (I think there's a 2nd version)
Inuyasha
Chobits
Love Hina
Sorcerer Hunters
And pretty much anything released by Tokyopop

UK animes I would have to suggest;

Patlabor
Cowboy Bebop
Evangelion
Nadescio
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Kiki's Delivery Service (I think Play.com are doing a special for these)
Castle in the Sky (I think Play.com are doing a special for these)
Noir
Excel Saga
City Hunter
Hellsing
Blood: the last vampire
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust (this one is really good but no one has mentioned it before I wonder if anyone else has seen it or the original)

US animes I would recommend;

Love Hina
Chobits
Vandread
Serial Experiments Lain
Trigun
Ranma 1/2 (first saw that on tv 8 years ago)
NieA_7
This list would go on forever there are too many good series only in the US.

I tend to go for comedy animes but thrown in there are some serious ones like Lain, Hellsing, Vampire Hunter D. One series that I am really enjoying at the moment which isnt out in the US yet is Azumanga, it's so funny I hope it comes to the UK soon.

July 17th is the released date for the next Ghibli any fans want to plan a trip to Japan for that. I still can't believe I havent seen a Ghibli on the big screen =(
