I've fianlly got round to saving enough cash to buy myself a nice, shiny iMac. I could afford a G5 but would never use it to it's potential so I thought I go for the middle of the road.

I was wondering if any of you guys have used or do use an iMac or any Mac with OSX on? Is there anything you can't do that you can on a PC? Apart from reboot, that is ...

While we're at it, can anyone recommend a Mac alternative to FrontPage Express?

Cheers in advance.

As we can see - Timmargh hs his heart set on a beloved Mac.

I wish him the best of luck...

(I still think he should just buy a PC and install Linux :P)

Thanks for that, Bob - it made me laugh.

I honestly don't see a problem with buying a Mac. Like I've said several times everytime I've used one I've never had any problems and friends who own/use them say the same. So there are some things you can't do that you can do on a PC - that's what Virtual PC is for.

And I don't actually use FrontPage Express, I just wanted a WYSIWYG HTML editor that didn't try and take over everythng like FrontPage does. I'd like to use Notepad but I'm not quite that good, yet.

I have had quite a bit of 'experiance' working here with Macs. The old OS's like 8 and 9 are unstable and bring up even more worthless error messages then Windows ME. OS X is a lot better as it is bassed on Unix and so is stable but in my opinion has too many annoying nice graphicly intensive bits that slow the machine down. My advise would be buy a PC. Heres someone else's opinion:

I've not much direct experience with Macs, but I've seen threads on other forums with lots of people singing their praises (particularly the new laptops). I can't say I'm not tempted to get one of the notebooks, although it'll be a long time until I can afford one!

Avoid Mac-only forums, they are apparantly very zealous. Just go and ask on a more knowledgable forum than this :O)

We've got them at college, trust me the are total crap, I cannot count how many times they have crashed on me and the hard drives have been corrupted, they are slow, unresponsive and a total waste of money, if your going for looks buy a poster of Britney or someone, they all do the same thing, we had most of the mac's stolen thank god, but they may look nice(ish) but they are a waste of time, don't buy one!

So you're going to waste time looking for replacements for programs like Frontpage Express (why oh why are you using that... that's another thread though).

Each to their own, but you have been warned.

Thanks for your words but I don't do anything remotely unusual with a computer. I just want something nice to use and look at and, when I've used Macs, I've found them, well, nice.

I know a lot of people on here use PC's and/or Linux or Unix but I gave all that up when I left my job to work for myself. I've earned a shedload of money and have actually decided to spend some rather than let it sit in my Egg savings account gathering dust.

I may regret it but if I do, I can always buy another PC. The machine I'm using at the moment is an 800MHz AMD with 512Mb of RAM and a crappy old 8Gb hard drive. My graphics card can barely handle 16 million colours at 1024x768 so I'm looking forward to something new.

And, again, thanks for all your words of advice ... even if I am going to ignore most of them!

Because from my point of view, my Mac crashes at least 5 times a week, and on days when it does crash, usually several times in short periods of time. I've learned to rely on Apple+S but it still gets my angry. And my work PC, in three years, has never ever crashed. I have a massive hard drive, plenty of RAM and do not abuse my Mac in any way, though I still love it. Yet it betrays me by crashing, all the goddamn time. That's why.

If I were you, I'd look at the other side of the coin: What do you want a Mac for? Why not a PC? From a technical point of view, they are rubbish, trust me. OSX is admittedly a large improvement over previous verisons, but they're still over-priced junk IMO.

OSX is loosely based on FreeBSD, which is nice - but if you want that why not just get a PC and install FreeBSD?!

There is far far less software for Macs (including drivers), it will drive you mad if you do anything vaguely non-standard and they aren't actually better than PC's at anything now. That includes design work.

So ask yourself.... Why?

I'm sorry to say but I never play games. Seriously. Unless you count board games, that is.
