yeah but its not 20k of the bog s**tandard £10 per 20m sh*t you buy in the shops. And it does affect it, it adds a minute or so to a download of 10MB (with ext 10min without 8-9min) that i can accept but when your downloading 200-300MB it makes a bigger difference.

That doesn't mean a line the length of a bus won't slow it down considerably.

Any way cheers for the feedback eveyone. Its more than i got anywhere else.

Right just stop worrying about the speed of the cables! There's no way your cable is going to be slower than the speed of your modem.

You're getting a bit confused between standard networking and ADSL cable. The cable that goes between the ADSL modem and the socket in the wall is not network cable, it is phone wire. Wireless/wired networks are a different cable standard (CAT5) and run between network cards/hubs/routers etc, not ADSL modems.

Now what you can do is get a router (so you can have a wired/wireless network) with an ADSL modem built in - you'd connect to the router with network cable (or wireless transmission if it were a wireless router) and the router would dial your ISP and generally manage the connection for you. This is expensive, however, and probably offers more features than you really need (plug in multiple computers, wireless allows your computer to move through the house, etc). A diagram of this would be something like:

phone socket-->ADSL modem/router------(wired/wireless)------->computer(s)

The cheapest way, of course, is to extend the phone line:

phone socket------------(great big long cable)--------------->computer

But as you say, you may get signal degredation (I don't know tbh). I don't know if you can get higher quality ADSL cable or repeaters.

*is this the same with adsl modems, if so can you suggest a good modem.

the cable that came with the modem is 3 metres i need 20-25m. I know i could have an extension phone line upstairs but a standard ext line slows it down. What i want to know is; is there i ext line i can buy that is faster than standard ones?

Well if your connecting an ADSL modem to a Phone line then the cable comes with the ADSL modem. The speed of the cable wont matter as your only going to be getting 512K or 1mb connection.
