If I had to make a guess, I'd say it was your modem causing problems, especially if it was provided by your ISP. They never supply anything more than they cheapest POS they can get their hands on.
442 Kbps (55.3 KB/sec) down actual
245 Kbps (30.6 KB/sec) up actual
not too bad I suppose. would a better modem affect these values I'm guessing the supplied isn't great.

576Kbit/s is what you should get, 512K ADSL always connects at 576Kbit/s. Have you tweaked your connection? As there are settings within Windows that will effect your speed. You should be able to get around 60k/s from a very fast source. Is that 45k/s the max you've ever got? Or are you surfing the net at the same time? Also uploading data at a pretty good speed i.e 20k/s would slow your download speed.
Go to www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp

It's about 576 Kbit/s and I have never had a download better than 45Kb/s.
I am occasionally disconnected from BTbroadband and cannot connect again until I restart my PC. I assume/hope this is a problem with my PC and not my connection, (I'm building a new PC next week so this one'll be my sisters problem) would I be right to make that assumption?

No its more like 60k/s standard. With all the overheads and that then if your connection is pretty good you get 60k/s from good sources. Some actual speed tests on websites show the connection a little slower some have it more real. An FTP I used use to measure the speed and I was getting nearl 63k/s but it reported the speed and yet I was still downloading the last meg or so. I have averaged about 62k/s over a few hours before. 64k/s is the max limit and if anyone gets that then their connection must be amazing as I have never seen 64k/s sustained.

The router plugged into the master socket.
Just using an extension kit from B&Q.

How so?
