I've phoned Sony and should be getting a replacement on Tuesday.

However - and not wishing to tempt fate! - I've had mine since launch, and have had no problems, despite several marathon sessions of SSX, NHL 2001 and Madden 2001.
I realise it doesn't help you or your situation, but don't forget - you never hear about the many satisfied customers; only those with problems!
More fool them, but then they shouldnt produce shi**y consoles that go wrong after 8 weeks, so big b*lls to Sony and hope they sulk.
I'm not saying all PS2 are shoddy, just the one I bought and two of my friends' machines have the same fate.

This was one of the things I did actually warn about on these very forums; that Tesco's 'grey imports' were a dubious purchase - not because of the PS2 faults, but the replacement policy.
Are Sony aware that this was a 'grey' machine? If so, I'm surprised they offered to replace it at all, to be honest.
No, when mine went bad, I used every single expletive under the sun and even made some new ones up on the spot.
Phoned Te**o the next morning, spoke to Customer Service Manager there who told me I could either have £300 of gift tokens or something else because they dont sell them anymore, I drove for almost 2hrs to the store I bought it from, went in and almost came to blows with this guy (who shall remain nameless).
Phoned Sony who said they would replace it, they had no explanation as to why it died and I really didnt care.
Phoned Te**o an used my newly formed curses, vented my frustration and almost broke the phone replacing it in the cradle.
So no, I wasn't laughing at all.
Havent done since Friday evening/Sat morning and wont do until I get my new one and some decent goddamn titles to play on it.
So that'll be almost the end of this year then.
That is all
When I figured mine had gone up-the-wall, the air went a slight shade blue to say the least.

Played WWF Smackdown 2 for a couple of hours, it paused and I reset it, fine. Paused again an hour later and got to start up section with config etc, and a clicking/whirring noise.
Oh how I laughed, the chuckles at having it stop for no reason whatsoever.
And the response from a major supermarket chain kept me rolling in smiles as well.
And SCEE are replacing it Wed.
Hurrah, apparently with a different laser system and improved drive mechanism.
Because I know of someone else who's PS2 went wrong on the Friday too. Oh, and a friend of mine who was visiting his local EB said that the Demo machine there went completely up-the-wall on the Saturday too.
Coincedence?

Popped in ISS, that worked fine then I popped in SSX and BOOM! the drive died, it started making this clicking sound and was promptly booted to the Browser/Configuration Menu.
Oh well, tomorrow I *should* be receiving my replacement.

Just a suggestion though, obviously I wouldn't condone people ripping machine off from Sony just in case their's might not work in...ah hell yes I am.
Trash your system, phone SCEE and get a new one, that way you know it'll be ok.
Beats spending £300 and finding one day, for no good reason that it will not work at all.
I may be a little bitter right now.
