You see this is an appeal for you to join www.find-a-drug.co.uk You might have heard about SETI@home, you know the thing where a program runs in the background using your unused processing power to scan data from a satellite dish.

Well FAD is similar in operation, except that instead of looking for aliens it looks for molecules and proteins that can be targeted for further research and stuff in finding a cure for cancer.

I have been running distributed computing projects for over a year now.
It doesn't require much effort, you download a small program and a work unit (WU). Then the program runs in the background just processing. When it finishes that WU it moves on to the next in the queue of 2 or 3 that you download every so often from the net. When it is finished it gets sent back to FAD.

The program doesn't cause slowdown, it only uses unused power, as whenever you do anything else like type a letter it lets you do that and then starts processing again. After all other than in video editing or really high powered games you only ever use an average of 10% or so of your computers capacity. So why don't you donate it to a good cause?

FAD has several ongoing projects. Currently these are cancer, HIV, malaria, multiple sclerosis, SARS and bio terrorism antidotes.

If you do decide to join, I have now created a Special Reserve team. The team number for entering on the setup screen is 2072. So come on join up. So far there is 13 of us in the team. Out of 147 teams, Special Reserve is ranked 54. There is even a linux version now.

One day our efforts could make a difference. Imagine the lives that could be saved. In Britain, 1 in 3 people get cancer. Over a million people a year die in developing countries from Malaria, 3 times as many as AIDS kills. Even so, HIV is at epidemic levels and kills 100,000s a year all around the world. 40 million people in Africa have HIV, and in time it will kill them all.

This project doesn't require anything much of you, all you have to do run the program in the background. You can help to make a difference. It all builds up, just from lots of people running this. So far nearly 4,000 years worth of computer time has been spent scanning 27.62 billion moleculules.

There have been successes in finding growth inhibitors on several occasions in several areas. So come on, join us and help save the world.

That would be two FADs running at the same time, because of the hyper-threading.

Two instances?

Sorry for being moronic (I can't help it :P), but what are these?

Hmm. FAD only runs on Windows or Linux, so I don't see why there would be anything to do with DOS there. Make a note of it next time and I might be able to tell you how to stop it.

Out of curiosity, do you run two instances of FAD at the same time or just one? With it being a hyoer-threaded processor I'm interested in whether you get two instances with a total CPU rating of more than just one instance. Try it sometime please.

Welcome back ortega, and Fooly Cooly/Vashu/Nausicaa/poke/bRAINdEAD/kittworld.

Finally fixed up my own PC properly, back running properly as opposed to just enough to stay green. I'm at least 600,000 GFLOPS down on the week. Better get a move on then I suppose...

THINK is back online on mine. Although still running my CPU at 1Ghz as still some problems to sort out. CPU rating is high 90's which is quite a lot lower as i was getting around 150 before.

I don't really pay much attention to it. I think it tries to run the programme in DOS and it asks me if I wish to continue. When everything has started up, I get an error message saying it's already open or something. Then I get the occasional error. I think that had the word 'cache' in it but it all works so I don't care.

Your in the stats now, so it must have worked in the end. Welcome to the team Mav. And to you to GP.

GP: what sort of error message are you getting?

Nope. Just a fluke. Either you click receive in the job queue window and pick the type you want yourself, or it just downloads a bunch at random.

I've been off-line most of the past week. I've only put in 117,832 GFLOPS this week, as opposed to my normal 700,000. I'll be back on track soon. I'm aiming on top 300 by the end of the year.

I don't know who she is exactly. But, a member is a member, I'm not going to complain.

There were a few targets in the past that had very low hit rates. I ran a bunch of jobs that never got any. At the end of the day though, whilst getting lots of hits is exciting, finding molecules that aren't worth looking twice at is just as important. We have to rule them out somehow.

Not all hits are created equal. What you don't see is that each hit has a value, or score, attached to it. Now since the CPU rating determines how long the computer works on a particular molecule, if you have a high CPU rating then you work for less time on a molecule. Joker! I believe has a lot of Linux systems, which when coupled with Intel processors give higher-than-they-should-be CPU ratings. Which artificially lowers the amount of time that is spent working on a particular molecule.

It isn't really that big a deal though, because the hits that crop up toward the end of a molecule tend to have a lower score. So yes, some get missed, but they are probably not worth worrying about anyway.

Yeah, I've been leaving my computer doing nothing quite a lot recently so I thought I might as well. I do get a lot of error messages when I start up my computer and for some reason it keeps trying to run in DOS when I start it up too. It doesn't really bother me though. My computer takes an age to start up anyway so what's clicking a load of error messages?
