Well FAD is similar in operation, except that instead of looking for aliens it looks for molecules and proteins that can be targeted for further research and stuff in finding a cure for cancer.
I have been running distributed computing projects for over a year now.
It doesn't require much effort, you download a small program and a work unit (WU). Then the program runs in the background just processing. When it finishes that WU it moves on to the next in the queue of 2 or 3 that you download every so often from the net. When it is finished it gets sent back to FAD.
The program doesn't cause slowdown, it only uses unused power, as whenever you do anything else like type a letter it lets you do that and then starts processing again. After all other than in video editing or really high powered games you only ever use an average of 10% or so of your computers capacity. So why don't you donate it to a good cause?
FAD has several ongoing projects. Currently these are cancer, HIV, malaria, multiple sclerosis, SARS and bio terrorism antidotes.
If you do decide to join, I have now created a Special Reserve team. The team number for entering on the setup screen is 2072. So come on join up. So far there is 13 of us in the team. Out of 147 teams, Special Reserve is ranked 54. There is even a linux version now.
One day our efforts could make a difference. Imagine the lives that could be saved. In Britain, 1 in 3 people get cancer. Over a million people a year die in developing countries from Malaria, 3 times as many as AIDS kills. Even so, HIV is at epidemic levels and kills 100,000s a year all around the world. 40 million people in Africa have HIV, and in time it will kill them all.
This project doesn't require anything much of you, all you have to do run the program in the background. You can help to make a difference. It all builds up, just from lots of people running this. So far nearly 4,000 years worth of computer time has been spent scanning 27.62 billion moleculules.
There have been successes in finding growth inhibitors on several occasions in several areas. So come on, join us and help save the world.

I know, quite a lot of fast jobs back then. You don't suit red :-(

:D
I realised that my firewall was blocking FAD from sending stuff automatically and thought I best send everything manually. So I did. Got another certificate :D

Yay :-D

Well not really a new name, I was a Vash before (I think) but I added the 'u' because that's how the Japanese tend to pronounce the name, so did my ex. :) Still not as bad as those who change it an awful lot on MSN, I mean come on who the hell am I talking to if your name is "Live in your world... play in ours" or "Every archaeological problem starts as a problem in geoarchaeology - Colin Renfrew" actually the last one I know as she's an archaeology student I talk to but still ;P I'd imagine the forums would get very very very confusing if everyone changed their username every so often :)
I didn't know whether to be competitive with FAD, as it's all for an important cause but still I can't help be competitive and want to do better than others and want to push my team up. Unfortunately my team can't go any higher and I won't match those at the top so there's little drive for me compared to in SR. Still they have an okay website, could have been better though.
If Aoe starts again and VenomByte and Unknown kernal was it? Sort out there connection problems or whatever then the team will start to do really well.
Maybe you can start a new thread or edit this one turn the site address into a link now, maybe lots of FAQ like you did with the Xbox turn it into a real Special Reserve team effort a new title "Help fight cancer - Join Special Reserve FAD team" that would get attention. The maybe provide a weekly stats update so then people can look in this thread rather than go to the website and go through those pages to get to our team stats. Obviously you can do it in a better way than this :) Just a few ideas to try and attract people to be part of the team, something special. You don't really need a website if you keep updating this thread like one.

(bold means they've either quit, forgot about it or can't run at the moment for whatever reason)
Damn if they only did different colours, well I'm sure there must be a way to show stats, really just looks like a mess at the moment.
Just checked the stats Special Reserve is down to 54 now, 55 tomorrow I'd imagine, damn, there's just too many Italians. The Finnish and Druglords should be over taken though and about 10 others eventually.
I've also raised my output a tad. Yes, I do infact have FAD running on my P2 300 MHz file server. It get's a rating of a whopping 23. I only run Proteome on it. I do however have a new (well...) processor on the way to use in an old board, so as I can retire the P2, at least until the next time I feel an urge to boost my CPU time stats. It's a Duron 900.
My goal is to keep SR production above 1 million GFLOPS a week.

The new HIV is almost 1/2 done, haven't had any of those yet, just gave each computer a ton of Proteome to do. Might give 1OZP-Q1 a go too.
Well it's a shame to leave but then I'm sure I'll be back, these teammates have far more computers than me, it's a shame they have a lot of quiters too. SR has been losing some too or people not being able to run the program anymore. My computers doing alright though I wished I could keep the other computer going 24/7 then I would be doing a hell of a lot more but my brother is having a week off and he tends to keep it off. Must hurry and get two new computers :)
Sucks about the two teams catching up, they're bringing in far too much to keep them at bay, some members have up to 20 computers so no way to compete with that :) when SR passes all the smaller ones it should get to position late 30s. Hopefully some new members will join and help out (or old) Wont be long till I get my 100 jobs 10,000 hits 1,000,000 Gflops, 1,000,000 molecules but still no certificates yet :)
Bit of advice regarding fans - don't get PCI slot type exhaust fans. They are more inefficient and die quicker than a normal 80 mm fan. Which you can normally fit at least one of at the back and front of a normal case.
My CPU had been running at around 70-80 degrees for god knows how long ( I only realised you can measure the temp the other week!) I'm running it (AMD XP 1800) at only 1ghz at the moment to keep it cool.
Mostly down to pretty much every fan in my PC being knackered. (exaust, cpu cooler and graphics card)
I may start using it again after i get a new exaust.
