After some unpronouncable team beat them 1:0 at St. James' the match went to Peno's.

Shearer, Dyer and Woodgate MISSED but somehow they pulled it back to Sudden death, but Aaron Hughes (?) missed and some other unpronouncable person netted his peno to win it 4:3.

to biggles:

did anyone respect liverpool the season they won it (some possibly respected them, because they won more than one piece of silverware), but the pressure was still on houlier to do it in the prem and champs league.

when i said tricky european games, i meant because of the cities, racism, crowd, stadium, conditions, poor referees, foul playing teams... (although all these could season newcastle into a good side)

yes celtic made it to the final (before being beaten partially well and partially fouly, by a PORTUGUESE team) they also recieved very little respect from other teams afterwards.

just qualifying for the champs league is worth 25mil more than uefa. you then get more money if you win games, than you do in uefa. you then get a few mil for qualifying to the next round. you could expect sell outs for most CL games, where as uefa could leave a few empty seats.

its a lot better to be playing in the champs league than uefa.

80000 Celtic fans respected it enough to travel to Seville. That's almost as many as MacArthur had when he retook the Phillipines in the Second World War.

Celtic did still mangage it.

Um, no. Celtic had a windfall of millions from reaching the final despite not winning.

With Newcastle now playing UEFA cup matches on a thursday this will mean alot less Premiership matches for them on a Saturday... this isnt good news for many Newcastle fans although i doubt thats what they were thinking about when the final whistle blew :s

Like someone else if you cant score at home then you have got problems whichever way you look at it... you cant expect to progress far in CL company without winning at home at least.

I would still have loved to have seen Newcastle go far this year, they were one heck of a fun team to watch in last seasons CL, im not so sure i will bother watching them on TV in the UEFA cup tho.

You would have thought Newecastle Utd would know about penalties from training, seeing that Robson had so many bad memories of them with the national team.

That's the second time Shearer has missed a penalty this season, and the second time Newcastle have lossed on penalties.

I was expecting Newcastle to win.

There is nothing to deny. The conceeded a sloppy goal on the Counter attack because aside from Woodgate taking his man O'brien ran across and left his man open in the centre for a tap in. If that wasn't the case Newcastle could have ran out a goal less draw. Going forward Newcastle or one of the best sides in the premiership and they always look like ythey are going to score. Last night things didn't go there way up front desipte Shearer and Ameobi giving his all.

Serbia and Montenegro are the team which beat Wales as they are now one of manyt areas which made up the old Yugoslavia. Technically very good and as they showed against Wales they defend well and use a very tight man marking system.

Newcastle Utd could win it, seeing that it would involve playing less matches than the Champions league: less players would then become exhausted.

its a shame that newcastle have taken such a huge step backwards. i thought they could have (gone no further) but have made progress in european football. they loose out on cash which everyone needs. they missed penalties (from players who usually net them)... bad news.

*does duljaj still play for partizan (at right back or midfield or something)?
