Hey.

What amime are you currently watching/enjoying?

Seen any decent anime films recently?

-------

I'll go first.

I'm currently watching Gundam Wing. Its truly excellent and is my fave so far.

I watched "Black Jack" the other day. Truly excellent movie about a doctor who is brought into a corporate Super-Human developing centre.

Going from the animes you've seen I'd suggest maybe Bubblegum Crisis 2040, Serial Experiments Lain, Hellsing, perhaps Noir after I've seen it, Blue Gender, A.D. Police. Although this list wouldn't be very helpful if you also like comedy, romance or other then there are lots more I could suggest you.

Is it worth buying the Neon Genesis Evangelion box set from Play? Its only £55 and i have my Credit Card in front of me. I'm quite new to Anime but I have seen and loved Macross, Macross Plus, Princess Mononoke, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Blood the Last Vampire and Perfect Blue. I've also got Akira, but I haven't got round to watching it yet

Anyone who would like to point me in the direction of anything good, it would be much appreciated. I tend to like seris better than films.

It's suprising how often anime threads are popping up on here now. A lot of you seem to be listing animes that came out well over a decade ago. Lets try and get people uptodate =)

Manga Entertainment were one of the first animes companies, they would have called themselves Anime but so many people get confused how to pronounce Anime (Ani-may/An-neem/etc) so they choose Manga and as they were pretty much the main company around during the 90ies in the UK everyone just called it Manga as there was no other way to describe this new animation medium. However people have started to call it correctly as anime lately and I believe MVC are finally renaming their section as Anime and not Manga.

Manga which are Japanese comics aren't popular in the UK yet because there really is no company and the American companies have been breaking their contracts and exporting their mangas into the UK, despite only owning the North American rights and not the rights for "all English speaking countries". So I think some companies are trying to buy the rights for the UK and then just ship them over into bookstores in the UK. Which really isn't good for our industry as they will hardly promote or advertise their products as a UK company would.

At the moment there seem to be a lot of anime releases, mainly due to ADV who have taken over the lead from Manga Entertainments. Look here for recent released and release dates of animes in the UK.

Some animes worth mentioning either already out or soon to be released, Burn Up Excess, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Martian Successor Nadesico, Noir (my brother just bought it), Excel Saga, Hellsing - a really good vampire anime has lots of fans, Samurai X, I think in October they're releasing the Cowboy Bebop DVDs and the movie (which by the way is great) Other animes that haven't got a release date yet but are really good, Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, Laputa, Yu Yu Hakusho, Serial Experiments Lain (people will love that), Sakura Diaries, Real Bout High School and Andventures of Mini-Goddess.

Lately I haven't watched much new anime, umm saw Spirited Away finally, excellent movie. Cowboy Bebop too, can't wait to own that. Will be watching Noir soon and will hopefuly be getting more DVDs of Hellsing.

Manga is also a company name. Using Manga as a term to describe all Anime is a little like calling all vacuum cleaners Hoovers

Manga = Japanese style art that is usuallly in comic books/novels.
Anime = Cartoon 'manga'. So it's moving.

Just thought i'd clear that one up for you.

Also - Concerning the Japanese/English issue - I don't mind to be honest. Sometimes english versions have a bad dub so its best to get the subtitled one.

Gundam Wing rocks!

Some of the stuff I have only has japanese audio with english sub titles (mainly because they're sourced from Hong Kong - Full Metal Panic, Excel Saga, Patlabor 3 and Chobits).

I think it depends on what kind of story it is, Love Hina definitely watches better with subs, whereas Noir, Ghost In The Shell, Patlabor 1 + 2 and others all seem better dubbed because reading the words at the same time as trying to fully take in the visuals is hard, sometimes distracting.
