I need some help from someone who knows a lot about computers. My computer has suddenly started acting odly. As soon as I turn my machine on when it is loaded I go to start > settings > network connections to connect to the internet, but each time I did so, the start menu froze, as did the task bar along the bottom of the screen - however I could still use desktop icons and stuff.

I kept re-setting and evetually the problem went away. However now every time I try and use Microsoft Paint the same thing happens now. I have just defragemnted and it is still being really weird. My hard drive isn't full to bursting (79% free space) - I dont have any crap like Kazaa still on my comp and I dont have any dodgy pirate software. I havent installed anything recently and this problem seems to have come out of nowhere!

Help!

Don't know much about XP I'm afraid, only had XP myself about three weeks and I've not had to mess with it, seems pretty bullet proof.

I dont understand quite what you mean here. The processor isn't running at 100% usage or whatever if thats what you mean (probably not though).

Well the problem occured first thing this morning when I had just turned my computer on so I doubt if it was too hot.

In that case don't remove paint or you'l have lost it for good...cancel what I said. Without being able to reinstall windows or add/remove programs it makes it tricky.

Do you have a virus scan program (updated), trojan scanner and/or firewall ? Some of these can have strange side effects - not saying you have one, but anything is possible if the problem just suddenly started.

Another thing to do is to see how much free resourcse you have, maybe something suddenly started hogging resources ?

Another possibility thats a little on the long shot side is a more simple cause. Heat. Warmer the CPU is the less stable it is, the heat today's been pretty high, and if you've had it on for a while then it could be a possibility. A long shot admittedly, but worth considering ?

What Windows do you have ?

I've tried the ctrl + alt + delete thing and it won't acknowledge that the programme is running or it says it is running fine (not "not responding").

I don't think I have the disks for windows either, I borrowed them when the comp was made.

Kyle if the problem persists then i think that the best thing to do is to back up all of your stuff, on cd's or onto the HDD that does not have windows on.
Then just reinstall windows, because paint is part of the windows paggage.
