I think it's high time we adopted the US's "three strikes" policy - get charged 3 times and you get life - , and introduced zero tolerance policing across the country, and lowered the age where we believe children are responsible for actions to about 5.

If you can throw bricks from bridges and shoplift then I personally don't give a toss how old you are.

The law is the law, I have to buy food, so why does that give some people carte blanche to steal continuosly and push up the prices we all pay ?

If you get caught twice, then caught a third time, then you deserve to get sent away. That's the whole idea of the 3 strikes thing, to discourage repeat persistent small time offenders.

Fair enough. But it's also resulted in some stupid sentences. Like a guy shoplifts for food...the third time he's caught for stealing a loaf of bread, he's sentenced to life. With rapists and murderers! How does does equate into the "3 strikes and you're out" rule?

Something similar based on the nature and severity of the crime might work.

As for vandals desecrating a synagogue..these people are sick, depraved individuals. Not just is it causing criminal damage, but it'a also an affront towards people's religious right and freedom to worship. It's also patently racist and people like this should be given a harsh custodial sentence.
