Just bought Broadband, and I want to make two computers into a network so they can both be connected. How do I do this? Do I need Ethernet cards in both? Do I need a wire? How much is a reasonable price to pay for these?

And I assume network neighbourhood is not detecting each one?

Assign IP address under the tcp protocols bound to the card on each comp.

Use 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 . And add them to any allow lists on firewalls you may have.

Right, I've got everything going and plugged it all in. I've installed the drivers for both ethernet cards, and connected the two of them up with crossover cable. Now what?

Purchase: 2 network cards and some crossover network cable

Plug in the cards and link them with the cable.

You might want to consider a router if the main purpose is to share a BB connection, it's pricey, but more stable (ie. if the host comp crashes, and you're sharing useing software, then the other comp will lose the connection too)

What does crossover mean? Also, that site, practicallynetworked.com is really confusing. I have no idea where to go or what to do. There are too many options. All I want to do is connect two computers together, for as little money as possible.

If you can't get crossover, you can buy a crossover adaptor from kustompcs.co.uk which will let you use normal straight-through (patch cable).

Thank you very much. I never realised it was so cheap.

Yes you need ethernet ports in both, which means ethernet cards if you don't already have the ports. You need a crossover network cable running between the PC's, ask for this specifically in Maplin (or wherever) as if you don't specify crossover they'll give you straight-through which is no good. Cards will be between £5 and £10 each, the cables are usually about a pound a metre (buy to fit).

www.practicallynetworked.com is a good site to look at for help.
