Ebay. Cex?

- Online. Obviously, online game downloads remove the chance of this anyway, but as some have pointed out, those with a good enough connection and no download caps are still in the minority. Until someone works out how to kick BT into gear in rural areas it's just not going to happen for many.

I've never met a serious gamer who didn't have a decent connection. Like I said, I have nothing against online retailers like Amazon.

- people. There are many people who only buy from physical shops and do not understand or trust online shops. It may not be you, but it's a huge chunk of the game buying public.

Is this a good thing? I think you're being naive, on-line buying is hardly complicated.

Also, to whoever said that people without internet are in the minority, I link you to studies from two years back which show that 3 in 4 households have a broadband connection

Extremely drunk right now so please excuse me if parts of this don't make any sense.

I wouldn't say that a person without internet is in the minority Alfonse, although gradually people are edging towards the online side of gaming. There are still pockets across the country without broadband access - either they wait for it to eventually reach them or they have to up and move to an area that has it.

From my time at Game, I believe the console bundles netted them a profit of about £2-£10 (hardly a massive profit there), hence why you have the staff try and sell you the pre-owned games, own brand accessories and the point-of-sale merchandise on the tills (which the profit margin was a lot higher). Still, the price of all these additional add-ons and games were always a little on the high side.

DL, I would say that GAME may have reduced the PC selection due to many kids buying PC games that outran the spec of their PC...despite asking if they have the right requirements they end up complaining that the game doesn't work and the big burly parents come in and threaten to deck you after work if you don't refund the money etc...they are a lot more hassle to sell...and there is no pre-owned market for them, Saying that, excluding a market was never going to win them many fans!

@Pete - that hacking thing is terrifying!

But for how long?, apparently HMV are not in great shape either.

Just what I said earlier pete ... 'the gilded cow' ... they've had their day and 'milked' it, now the 'herd' have gone elsewhere :¬)

Including Mr R.Gilmour I notice :¬)

Yeah it's a shame videogames can't be distributed via online download

I've been waiting a long time for the death of the gaming high street stores. Prices are absolute garbage

Screw downloads. I have no dedicated internet in my home and no chance of getting it because of my landlord. The only way I'm online now is because I'm cheating BT :) Downloads, even the smallest ones are impossible as is online gaming.
What would you do about everyone under 18 who doesn't have a way of transferring money, or those who are unhappy about buying online, or just those people who love owning a physical copy? Screw downloads.

You're in the minority. You can get a debit card at age eleven. Why would you be unhappy about buying online? I never said get rid of on-line retailers.

Lets just put it this way guys, I would never buy a console or PC game from GAME because:

No 1: Their range is terrible
No 2: Their prices are horrible (Super Meat Boy for £15? Online you can get the humble indie bundle pack for any price you choose which has that and about five more games in it)

If someone bought me a gift from GAME, I'd be sad that they'd wasted their money. Who honestly has consoles/PCs but doesn't have broadband? These stores are holding back the industry.

Some interesting comments there guys, especially on the PC gaming front which DL quite correctly pointed out is a market somewhat neglected by most high street retailers.

Anyone seen this about hackers beating some online banking systems?, it all sounds a bit dodgy to me.

I can't remember the last time I went to a store to buy a game. It's all Amazon, TheHut and Play for me now. Competitiveness between sites online, especially with impartial sites like Google shopping getting you the best price in nanoseconds, is making the cost of games online dirt cheap, even with delivery added, when compared to high street prices, where the key words are 'high' and 'prices'.

If I may be so bold as to add a 'few pennyworth' to this discussion, I do have to agree with Alfonse and Nin here.

This discussion must be wholly-centred on the console market ... Game et all, have reduced their PC range dramatically since their appearance on the High Street, so much so that I can't think that any PC gamer goes near them at all now, and the same applies to the supermarket outlets....extremely limited, except for Morrison's occasional PC clear-out sessions!

I do prefer to have a physical copy which for years I have bought from Play or Amazon. Occasionally I have downloaded games from Steam, but 7 hours download etc is just a joke and yes I know you can make back-ups, but it just isn't the same. So as far as Game and Gamestation and all the other High Street retailers are concerned ... you've brought it on yourselves, high prices (milking the top titles) and depleteing PC stocks for the, yes I admit it, passing PC gamer. Tough, had a good run and I bet someone's made a few million, but that's life ... hard times!
