I didn't really follow a lot of politics, especially between the ages of -1 and 10. So I have no idea what horrible things Thatcher has done to make people want to celebrate her death in the streets. I don't think I learnt anything from watching Spitting Image either. Should I be sad or happy?
The simple fact is that 70's Britain was a complete shambles, built around old industries that were no longer financially viable due to unions and foreign competition. She saw this and made the unpopular but necessary decision to pull the plug on those industries and invest in banking & new technology. In the space of 10 years this country went from blackouts, 3-day weeks and financial ruin to thriving. Yes the industrial communities suffered but they were dying anyway and were taking the country down with them, the bigger picture was that they had to go.
As for the milk thing, people conveniently forget that was Heaths government and the budget she was given. Heath wanted free milk withdrawn from schools entirely for all ages, Thatcher actually argued the case & PROTECTED free milk for for under 11's.
No testing seems to have taken place ... yet blocked page seems to have been solved, editing a post fails!
So here it is again ... agreeing with chas
My dad, as a young boy, played tennis with a younger girl called Maggie Roberts. He also visited one of her dad's two shops in Grantham to buy his ration of sweets on the way to school ...
I remember joining a protest march against the removal of free school milk for the over 7's in 1971/72 perhaps ... remember Maggie Thatcher/Milk Snatcher ...
My dad's still alive and remembers her very well ... he's outlived his tennis partner and this afternoon I heard him crying
Not too sure what's going on with the forums this afternoon, for the past couple of hours I keep getting the programming code coming up on pages and when I tried to start a new thread it just keeps taking me to the "Continue to Freeola chat" page.
Anyone else having problems?
Have you not looked at the forum threads today at all ... start now and start at 0925 in the General Chat
Bottom line; I can't see that her legacy has had ANY lasting benefits.
