I think the reason for many of the coal mine closures was that the existing mine's supplies were running out and the coal that was left was hard and inefficient to extract due to things like the coal seams being fractured and disjointed so it wasn't economically viable.
Has anyone else seen them reports from Taiwan on Thatcher's death? They got her mixed up with the Queen so splashed the Queen's photos all over the media by mistake! There's also been some foreign news agencies circulating pictures of Meryl Streep in "The Iron Lady" mistaking her for Thatcher as well!

-Provided airbases for the US bombing of Libya
-Ship destroyed by British forces outside of the maritime exclusion zone during the Falklands War
-Eagerly signed up to British inclusion in the the Gulf War where numerous atrocities were committed by coalition forces
Then you just have other various reasons to hate her as a human being
-Supporter of the illegal war in Iraq
-Supporter of the Apartheid regime who opposed sanctions on South Africa during it and denounced the ANC and Nelson Mandela while he was in prison.
-Allowed about ten people starve to death instead of letting them regain their status as political prisoners
-Friend to Pinochet, brutal Chilean dictator with thousands of human rights abuses having occurred under his regime.
-Bought the Trident programme from the US, tripling the size of our nuclear arms programme which drains the economy to this day
As for the ridiculous rocketing of nationwide housing prices that has left first time buyers effectively unable to get on the property ladder, thought that happened on Blair's watch? I know some people who made an awful lot of money from it and they can't have been any older than primary school age around the time old Mags was in power.

[i]Just finished a college project on the mines in the 1980's. From what I gathered, Thatcher lied to the miners by initially raising their pay, only to increase productivity so the government could stockpile coal for the inevitable closures. So yes the closures were necessary to implement modern technology and improve efficiency as well as health and safety, but the execution of it seems very immoral.
Not seeing the lie or the immorality here.

She didn't do it out of any sort of kindness, she did it purely to stockpile coal so the UK economy (i.e. the south) didn't get hit as hard when the closures came about. The mining industry was one of the biggest industries in the north of England, as well as Scotland and Wales.
My foot is still very painful. Going up and down stairs is now a real problem. Somehow I need to drive the kids to the dentist tomorrow, too.

As usual it's the minority getting upset that they were sacrificed for the greater good. I get why they're upset but considering they were running the country into the ground with union demands and economic reliance on coal, it had to be done.

I'm not saying she's without fault, I'm not such a fan of her social policies but I'm realistic and I always got the sense that she actually cared and had principles, something no-one has had since.
Regarding housing, yes it's unfortunate that a lot of things had to be privatised but again, the money to rebuild had to come from somewhere.

Obviously not old enough to comment first-hand, but from what I've read about Liverpool's history, particularly in the docklands, I can't say she'll be missed.
