When I came to Japan my father-in-law had a business selling rice crackers and traditional Japanese snacks to family run stores (mostly old people).

He employed his wife, her sister and his old boss. Rented a white van and two offices adjacent each other in our "high street".

Most of the time, I would see him and his old boss just smoking or spending most of the day in a nearby coffee shop. It was pretty obvious to me he could have run the whole business by himself in just one office, but he had too much pride.

He also had customers who couldn't pay, but would still continue making orders that he fulfilled and a drunk landlord who always moaned about being poor had asked him to pay more rent as he was doing so well with his business. So he did.

Gradually all the profit disappeared and he started to borrow money. First from the banks, then his wife, then his sisters and brothers, then friends and finally his in-laws.

After several more years living in denial he decided to quit the business. He had to sell the house they had just paid off, let all the staff go, quit renting the work van, sell their family mini-van and move in with their eldest daughter whose husband insisted they live with them.

Unfortunately for them, my Albanian brother-in-law (both their daughters married foreigners) can be very weird. He assumed they would put all their worldly possessions into one room that they would also be sleeping in. Of course this was impossible and many boxes filled their house (in fact he counted them - 94). He gradually got more angry and complained about everything. So after one month they moved out again and haven't spoken to him for one year now.

It was all too much stress for me to deal with all this while my son was in hospital. Now they are slowly burning away whatever is left of the house money renting an apartment.

True.

Twinings Butter Mint tea is like drinking a humbug. That's a good thing, by the way.

You always 'try and make do' for all your life and to 'play within the game'. But a double redundancy within the last 3 years and no prospect of any employment, does make you rather unsure about the future!

...and for goodness sake, don't use anything dodgy especially where your children can be involved ie credit reference agencies ... your children will be connected to you unless you disassociate yourself from them financially ... and in writing!

I'll probably be around 60 when/if I get any grandchildren anyway, my eldest is only 9 now. It's really not worth worrying about things you have no control over and enjoy the life you have.

Well, I know that's easier said than done, but you try and make do...

Various things have made my finances tumble again this last month, mostly stuff out of my control, but hopefully I'll dig myself out of the hole and I'm not stupid enough to use dodgy methods of getting hold of any money.

Like the train of thought Machie ;¬) But 60 isn't 'middle age' and I'd rather be younger than 95 when Millie had a child!

She's nearly 18 months now and a real character, but I seem to be her favourite ... nana is too strict, I suspect :¬) I'd really not like to miss out ... but then you guys have the advantage.

P.S. My sister had her first child at 40 ... on her 40th birthday as well!

60 is middle age though, now you get to enjoy your life, build fences and have no more worries. Hopefully Millie won't start her own family late like my sister-in-law. She had her daughter at 37. You'd be 96 by then.

Hey guys, anything planned for the weekend?

Dare I mention 'fence building'?

I'm 60 on Monday and I don't really know what to expect ... what to feel or how I approach the rest of my life! I've a lovely granddaughter and I just wish I could still be breathing when she has children :¬)

Fantastic, another poorly optimised port. GTA IV ran like a pensioner on a racetrack made of marmite

No, supposedly they've made use of 16Gb RAM... as in, it's not simply leaky, horrible cheap coding, but actually uses it to "prettify" and enhance.

But... we'll see...
