Does it matter how it looks if the game itself isn't all that good?
One critic suggested it wasn't the best game he'd ever played... didn't say it was bad, gave it an average score.
I'll reserve judgement until someone more qualified (me!) has had a play.

How many frames per second did the original Wolfenstein run at?

How's that even relevant? Are you suggesting that games devs shouldn't push boundaries?

I understand ... but why waste the opportunity of a wider market? If Bioshock Infinite catered for a wider audience, why not such an eagerly awaited game as Wolfenstein: The New Order. Metro:Last Light managed it.

I assume because ID, now part of Bethesda, were the driving force behind pushing later versions and upgrades to Direct X and graphics rendering when Doom 3 was released, and that attitude hasn't changed.

If you remember, when Doom 3 was due for release, countless geeks (me included!) ran to the nearest pc parts store to upgrade their kit. I spent what my missus described as a "ridiculous amount" on rebuilding my pc just to play it at full settings... although I remember her words being somewhat more... vibrant, shall we say...

BI only catered for a wider audience by default; it was built on the Unreal 3 engine, meaning that the core programming was already designed to work with DX9 up. Wolfenstein is built on a version of the tech5 engine, as far as I know, so properly coded in-house for next- gen gaming.

you'll be seeing more of this as we go on I'm sure, 'cos now pc games have to compete with the next gen consoles.

Strange enough though, the two cards mentioned are relatively 'low' level cards.

The 7850 was actually set somewhere in the mid range on release, and the beefed up 2Gb cards are actually pretty agile. The newer 270's and 280's are "enthusiast" cards; not stupidly expensive (like the 290's and 295's) but high-end enough to cope with, say, Crysis 3 on max settings, or BF4 on Ultra.

To be honest, the mid- range kit these days is kind of the sweet spot, perfectly capable for a reasonable price. The high end cards simply come with "bragging rights".

Additionally, DX11 is far more efficient than DX9, meaning that games will run far better on a mid range DX11 card than they will on a top- flight, uber- expensive DX9 card.

Not quite sure what you mean chas?

My 9800 GTX + runs DX11?

Cards mentioned in Bethesda's specs are: "Nvidia GeForce GTX 460, AMD Radeon HD 6850!

Where did the 7850 come from?

Both are low level cards, so it begs the question ... 'why the high specs?"
The 9800 cards are DX10. Your computer may well run DX11, but the DX11 coding will only be accessible on DX11 or above cards (DX9 and 10 routines are still run if DX11 is installed on your machine). That means that, for example, Bioshock Infinite, which runs in DX9, DX10 or DX11, will default to the most appropriate DX version based on your hardware, and will disable the specific functions available in later DX versions where they are not compatible with your hardware.

Bottom line, you'll only actually run DX11 with a DX11 card.

...and I was referring to the cards I recommended to you when I said about the 7850 etc...

Morning.

Oh well, Wolfenstein review here doesn't sound that promising.

Will pick this up second hand in a month or so, it'll be £15 by the summer. Got a few of the free games off XBL to play through yet (last Hitman is one) & still enjoying Titanfall big time. Also not got much time to play it at the moment anyway so definitely not a £40 day 1 purchase for me. New GRID looks quite interesting as well, more of a throwback to the old TOCA games from back in the day.

Is that like "why the long face?"

I think my PC and laptop should play it fine. I really don't care if I don't get 60fps and full HD resolution, just whatever plays smoothly. Will be interesting to compare with Ps4 and XBO.
