That's the second of the year already...
Of course today we have the biggest & greatest rock star of all time, Mr. Kanye West. It must be true, he said so himself! :)
"Grace Slick .... Jefferson Airplane/Starship
Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks ... Fleetwood Mac
Annie Lennox
Debbie Harry "
I think the thing that has changed in today's music scene is bands still generally get recognition from within their genre but in most cases rarely outside of that. I reckon if many of these mentioned bands came out today they would not have anything like the level of success they did back then.
To some of us David Bowie was 'an up and coming singer' of the day ... he was ok then went 'pear-shaped' ... the music world then was offering far better and there are far too many to mention who are better and are still performing. He was 'a small part' of modern music development and for that he needs a small remembrance ...
He's been clever with his last album and the song lyrics.
Also on Twitter his last follow is worth checking!
I happened to go to the same school as David Bowie - obviously *many* years later...!
[s]Hmmm...[/s] Not all of the artists I was thinking of were male either. Like I said earlier there's still loads of great stuff being produced these days, you just have to dig about a bit to find it.
...And that sort of IS my point.
It's the "digging around" bit I'm talking about. The greats from 20, 30, 50 years ago stood out. You'd turn the radio on and instantly know you were listening to Queen, for example, as opposed to now, where you turn on and go "who the hell is that?"
Might just be me, but I really cannot tell the difference between most of the "big names" now...
And if Bowie could still be a pioneer after 50 years, it's not a case that it's all been done already.
My pet peeve?
Hearing some god-awful rap artist taking a stab at a Queen song, or some strangled-cat soundalike butchering a T-Rex hit.
It's not "new and fresh", they're not "making it current" or "bringing it up to date for a new audience", they're ruining it.
