Also; Siouxsie Sioux, Aretha Franklin off the top of my head, I'm sure there's more.
Some would say Madonna, but I'm not a fan.
As for the men...another couple from my list; Roger Waters (Pink Floyd), Robert Smith (the Cure)
Morning.
I'm disappointed with you guys, very few women on that list of legends.
Grace Slick .... Jefferson Airplane/Starship
Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks ... Fleetwood Mac
Annie Lennox
Debbie Harry

Jim Morrison/The Doors
Jerry Garcia/The Grateful Dead
Robert Plant/Led Zeppelin
Deep Purple
... and many more to come, when the greyness of dementia becomes clearer
Jon Anderson/Yes
Robin Trower
Jimi Hendrix
Not exactly my point.
NOBODY stands out currently, they all sound similar, songs mostly consist of a handful of words and a regurgitated "tune" that pretty much cycles through a few times, there are no epic stars...
You always KNEW when a Bowie song was playing, you always recognised Freddie and Queen, ELO and Jeff Lynne, Deep Purple, BOC, Elton, all the others you mentioned and those you didn't, they all made their own mark.
They all stamped their own brand on popular music.
Sure, there was tat, there always is, but that didn't stop those relative few making a massive impact (in fact it enhanced it). As for waiting for some of them to mature, how old was Bowie when his first single was released?
Now all we get is "Camp Cowell" or Ed Shearan Sound-alikes, "remixes" and covers (essentially pretty bad versions of great songs)...
I'm just not a Belieber...
But that's pretty much what I said, too. Bowie's first single was in 64, his first hit was 69. I was joking about Barlow, but the point is that some artists take a while to be recognised. Even with Space Oddity Bowie was still a fringe artist that many hadn't heard of, though he captured the zeitgeist of the age of space missions and moon landings, which helped. That said, there's nothing that stands out, as you say, but I'm pretty sure that's the media (Cowell included, but started with Stock, Aiken and Waterman) taking on the industry and not allowing room for independent artists to flourish.
John Martyn
CSNY
John Sebastian
Jefferson Airplane/Starship
Justin Hayward and Moody Blues
Mike Oldfield
Nils Lofgren
Bruce Springsteen
Bob Dylan
etc etc ... I'll post more when I sweep the grey hair out of my eyes and I have a 'break' from dementia ...
