Eurogamer had a good article on the problem (which affects both consoles) last year.

Well my Xbox was manufactured in Jan 2008 (even though i bought it December 2008). It definitely has the Falcon chip in it, and it's also an elite. But still, RROD persists. Microsoft have made a pretty unreliable machine.

Oh. And i'm typing this in mcdonalds on my nokia 5800. I love this phone and if I get an ipod touch i can use this as a free wireless access point, much cheaper than iphone and no contract.

Ps3's did suffer issues at first too, blu-ray drives they first used failed a lot and ylod was aproblem for 60 and 40gb machines. Slim is supposed to be pretty tough though, but if you're buying from game or gs then i'd still go for 3 years cover on 360 or ps3.

Aww Chris I didn't notice, we jinxed it! I thought you'd be safe because you had a newer machine? Does this mean Emmie is the only one not to experience RROD? Damn that 60% failure rate is looking small, we're at 87.5% now. Sorry buddy, I hope you can get it sorted.

edit. updated the list, jubba brings it down to 83%. Wii at 10% and PS3 below 30%. I think I might get a PS3 if this continues.

I thought the RROD had pretty much been resolved with newer hardware revisions of the 360! Thought that had been the case for more than a year... apparently not!

I'm sure that they will replace it without fuss, and hopefully they will chuck in the 1 month free live card too, otherwise yeah complain! aha.

I would promote getting a PS3, it would be nice to see another Freeola user on there. But is the rather expensive option...

That's the main thing i'm concerned with to be honest. I'm hoping to be reimbersed a month's membership, as asking £40 a year is already cheeky, let alone losing a whole month because of something i can't help. Will just have to hope Microsoft do a decent job. And the Playstation option is a last resort. If it this really messes up, I'd prefer to take a price plunge and get a more reliable console in the longrun.

They should fix it no problem, when I sent mine away for repair it came back with a months free gold to cover the time it was away.

Chris, another option if your console is dead is to buy a cheap arcade 360 and just stick your elite HDD in it.I've seen them for £109 @ Shopto.net (they do Quidco cashback, not sure if its available for consoles though). You could sell the controller should get it down to about £100.As pb already mentioned you would get a new warranty that way, thats got to be worth £20 ?.If you swap it for a PS3 which although more robust than the 360 are not bulletproof either. My mates is on its 3rd Blu Ray drive (and he hardly uses it). Then add the cost of swapping all your existing games, that's not going to be the cheapest option.

Well according to the site it's out of Warranty (only had it for just over a year) but it's got an E74 error, and when I put the problem in etc. it came to the cost screen, it was nothing, so I'm presuming I'm ok. Only thing i'm worried about is that my dad has knocked it over twice before now (tripping on the cable) and mum has pushed a chair into it knocking it over. There seems to be something loose inside when you shake it, but it hasn't affected gameplay at all, but they may look at it as a physical defect. If they do, i'm scrapping the Xbox and going for a Playstation instead. It's bad enough that i'm going to lose about a month or so of XBL membership, let alone being told i've got to pay $120 (english?) to get it repaired. So yeh, will see what happens.
