If you've ever tried watching a DVD on a full HD TV the problem will become very obvious. At that resolution you're stretching the picture which causes crackling and fuzzing that you wouldn't notice on a normal TV..
I have an Oppo upscaling DVD player and they are excellent at displaying DVD's on HD panels.I have 46'' full HD plasma and some DVD's don't look that all that much worse than Blu Rays when played through it.Of course titles such as Toy Story 3 & How To Train Your Dragon will always show the limits of the format and do look a hell of a lot better on Blu Ray.
Don't really understand the desire to have this HD and Blu-Ray 'stuff' :¬) From what I read, Blu-Ray doesn't have any advantage over DVD and as for HD....friends who 'know' are beginning to regret any choice they had that way. As for 'buying' and 'watching' films you've already seen...well, that's another matter :¬D

I had planned on buying DVD's until the price of Bluray came down and I will do for the smaller films but for somthing like Scott Pilgrim or Toy Story 3, it's not an option because you'd ruin the visuals.
EDIT : Is there any possible way to upscale Hayden Christensen's appalling acting ?
Watched Attack Of The Clones in HD on the TV this afternoon.I had forgotten just how crap Hayden Christensen was in it,he is Mannequin Skywalker.Didn't think the transfer was all that amazing TBH,hope the Blu Ray's coming out later in the year are better than that.Still not decided whether to buy all 6 movies or just the 3 good ones, although Revenge Of The Sith was a lot better than Episode 1 & 2 IMO.
As far as I know, no HD version is currently available to TV companies, so what they do is upscale it. Much of the TV on ITV HD and BBC1 HD is upscaled as the red cameras they'd need to use for most shows would cost a fortune. Things are slowly going over to HD (Formula 1 this year and Doctor Who's last season, for instance) but other stuff like soaps and the news just wouldn't be worth the cost at this stage.
And don't forget that the TV channels are broadcasting at a lower quality resolution than full HD anyway due to bandwidth and cost.

Blu-ray's advantage over DVD is:
- visibly higher quality picture. You can see far more detail. With films it makes a huge difference on a 32" screen or above. On discs from digital prints like Avatar and Toy Story 3 the picture is stunning when compared to the DVD.
- More storage on the disc for extras
- The software allows for far more interactive features during the film and special features, including extra footage online and downloaded to the player
What choice are they regretting? Getting an HD TV? You mean despite it being slimmer, better resolution, freeview built in, upscaling (in some models), cheaper to run, perfect for gaming etc..?
Gaming on SD and HD is the ultimate way to show the difference between the 2 systems, look at something like Gears of War on a standard CRT TV and compare that to the same game on an HD TV. There is no question about the quality difference.

How so?
In terms of what on earth people are on about :D
Randomly said to one of my mates the other day the line from the film IT "Do you wanna balloon?" Reminded me of perhaps one of the funniest scenes ever
He is an alcoholic and it is destroying his family.
