BBC 1 HD isn't even in 1080i, they hadbto reduce it to get it working properly.
It's definitely 1080/50i in my area (I receive it on Freeview HD).We did have a lot work on our local transmitter back end of last year (experienced lot of daytime outages),I believe this was mainly to do with work required for the HD channels.
Pretty much all console games are actually encoded at 720P,then upscaled.Freeview/Sky HD are 1080i though which I always think doesn't look as good as 720P.There's a good video which explains how the 3 HD standards work here,it's worth a look if anyone's interested.I would agree best getting a 1080P panel if you can, especially as Blu Ray is getting more affordable these days. But on my 32'' panel you have to get pretty close to the screen before you can really tell any difference.
PS3 has some games in 1080p native resolution. It's entirely possible for the 360 and PS3 to show games natively in 1080p but the amount of extra processing puts a lot of developers off.
However, getting a 1080p TV now will ensure you don't need to worry about the specs Of the next generation just around the corner.

I personally would think most high street stores would have a number of well priced sets from known manufacturers. Just be sure to ask if not sure about the specs (places like currys are awful on NOT advertising what you want to know)
Hiddenwingz, there's a 32'' LG LCD TV at Amazon for £230 if that's of any interest to you? That's a really cheap panel,I paid that for the stand for my plasma! It is a 1080P panel but TBH it's not a big deal on a screen of this size.Blu Ray is really the only format which currently uses this (unless you own one of the new 1080/50P AVCHD camcorders).
And some games.
But I'd say never go with 1080i (HD Ready) these days anyway and if you're getting an HDTV you should think about getting Bluray to show it off anyway.
Swimming for the girls today, back into the routine again.
Still feel tired after yesterday's trip out, but have to wait in the car later on for a while anyway, can rest then.
