The Americans just pulled down the statue of Saddam in Baghdad with the blessing of the Iraqi people.
Quite extraordinary. The Iraqis started it, hitting it with sledgehammers, then the Americans came and pulled it down with an armoured veichle. and hung the old Iraqi flag on it.
When it was down the Iraqis lobbed rocks and boxes and things at it and were chanting "death to Saddam".

An absolutely wonderous sight it was - history in the making, just as when the Berlin Wall came down.
BBC interviewed an exiled Iraqi in Jordan, and he said exactly what I've said in my 'War on Saddam' post - that the cost in civilian lives and injuries is undoubtedly terrible, but has been far less than Saddam himself would have inflicted if left in power.
Today's events are justification, in my humble opinion. The Iraqi people wanted it, and that's all that matters. It's not over, but some of the crowd are definitely on the pitch!

Just posted about it in Chat. Whatever your feelings on the war, this was an incredibly powerful and moving scene. I think the US flag over Saddams head was a bit distasteful, I was suprised by the applause from Iraqis it got. Thankfully they soon took it down and the Iraqi flag was put in its place.
