because, in modern times:

girl = woman.

Distancing yourself from one implies you aren't the other. Making a big fuss over claming not to be a girl, which anyone these days can rightfully translate as a claim to masculinity, was not only completely unecessary, but was asinine and pasthetic.

I'm sure I'll forget all about this in the morning, but right now, I can think of very few ways to lower yourself in my opinion.
