What was Space shuttle Columbia's mission anyway? I know that they broke up as they were in re-entry, terrible.
They should have used another of the space shuttles after the incident a couple of months ago about the heirline cracks.
Maybe that heirline crak problem was a warning of some kind say not to got into space this time with the space shuttle Columbia.

How much would it have costed if they swaped to another space shuttle? Surely not as much as the original cost of using Cloumbia?

With the greatest respect to the families of those lost...

They are saying "foul play has not been ruled out".

Are they going to try an pin this on Saddam or Bin Laden?

Just seen this on the news, terrible.

By the way I don't think Saddam or Bin Laden would have the technology to shoot down an object which is 200,000 feet in the air and travelling at 12,000 miles an hour!

From www.NASA.gov

A Space Shuttle contingency was declared earlier this morning in Mission Control when communication was lost with the Space Shuttle Columbia during its return to Earth following a 16-day mission.

Communication and tracking of the shuttle was lost at 9 a.m. at an altitude of about 203,000 feet above north central Texas while traveling approximately 12,500 miles per hour (Mach 18).

No communication and tracking information was received in Mission Control after that time.

Flight controllers in Mission Control immediately began the process of securing all information, notes and data pertinent to today's reentry and landing.
