Taken from Total Film magazine:

Subtitled When Harry Met Lloyd, New Line's solution to Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels' palming off a follow-up is to go the prequal route. Set in 1986, teen nobodies Eric Christian olsen (as Harry) and Derek Richardson (as Lloyd) will play the gruesome twosome, escaping their school's special needs department so they can graduate. Troy Miller directs.
ETA: Summer 2002

Well I was excited until I saw it was neither the orignal cast or crew. Could be good, probably won't but I just hope it doesn't taint one of my favourite films. Is out this Summer (don't know if that's USA, here or both) so I would guess there's a trailer out online now or soon.

October 01, 2002 - Will there ever actually be a Simpsons feature film? Series creator Matt Groening has been teasing fans for the past year or so with the idea, but no firm plans to make a movie have ever been announced.

Until, now, it seems. CHUD dug up this report from the Vancouver Film Festival, where Simpsons executive producer Al Jean happened to be in attendance. Jean apparently told a room full of people that the principal cast of the show had all signed on for no less than three motion pictures. The comment got an immediate positive reaction from those present, as can be imagined.

Jean emphasized that there is still no solid timeline for the project. The show is in its fourteenth year with no signs of slowing down, and the writers are having enough trouble as it is filling a 22-minute episode these days. [That explains some of the more bizarre ones I've seen lately.] The producers are also anxious that the films be quality, movie-worthy material, and not something slapped together to make a few box office bucks.

That said, a six-man writing team (including Jean himself) are on the job, working on the script of the first Simpsons movie.

It's also worth remembering Groening's recent comments that if and when a film is made, it will probably done concurrent to the television series, rather than waiting for the show to end.

For more news from Springfield, stay tuned. Thank you, come again!
February 15, 2002 - It's old news by now that Matt Groening, the genius behind the incredibly popular animated phenomenon The Simpsons, is planning to produce a full-length Simpsons movie or two somewhere down the line. What hasn't been known is when Mr. Groening intends to begin working on said film. If the project is to remain on the shelf until the Simpsons series comes to end, fans could be in for a long wait. Fox recently renewed the series for at least a couple more seasons, and the show's popularity exhibits no signs of abating.

But Groening has now told Cinescape magazine that when a Simpsons feature is produced, it will in all likelihood be done concurrently with the television series.
"'I've got lots of ideas, all of which seem like they might be more appropriate for the TV show,' Groening told [Cinescape]. 'It's very hard to come up with stories that justify a big-screen treatment – but we're thinking about it.'

"When asked if fans would have to wait until the show ended before being treated to the film, he replied, 'No. We'll get to it and everyone will be especially tired that year.'"
When one also considers the recent announcement that the Futurama crew – many of whom are Simpsons alumni – are ceasing work on the show and allowing Futurama to exhaust itself with its thirty as-yet-unaired episodes, it seems a very real possibility that these same talented animators might end up pitching in on the feature film. At any rate, it would be a shame to let that talent go to waste!

We'll keep an eye on things and let you know as more news becomes available.
August 03, 2001 - Ever since the FOX network premiered The Simpsons back in December of 1989, rumors about a theatrical film have circulated in fan circles and the press. Unfortunately, they have usually proved to be little more than just that – rumors. Creator Matt Groening has said on a number of occasions that a Simpsons would happen at some point but probably not until the series finally ended its run on the network.

Entering its 13th season (with no signs of stopping), FOX may be re-thinking the "wait for it to end its network run" strategy. With the success of the South Park film (produced while that series was at the height of its popularity) and the Simpsons franchise rising again in popularity, FOX (never one to let a good franchise quietly slip away) is once again looking at the denizens of Springfield and asking if a move into the movie houses is possible.

"Our biggest problem is what do to in a film that couldn't be or hasn't been done on the series," an anonymous source at FOX told IGN FilmForce recently. "A number of ideas are being floated around, some interesting and some downright awful. The most interesting idea to me is one that would make The Simpsons the core of an animation revival at FOX."

An animation revival at FOX? The last time we heard that kind of statement was right before Titan A.E. was released. Its box office (or lack thereof) nearly destroyed FOX's animation department. Their next big project is 2002's Ice Age so just where would The Simpsons fit in? Our source elaborates:
"The major concern is that a Simpsons story wouldn't be able to sustain an 80 to 90 minute film. Bart and Homer are definitely funnier in small doses which brought some of us to the idea of doing Simpsons short films. The Simpsons have developed such a rich universe that you could easily do a series of shorts that would run with FOX films in release. The beauty of The Simpsons is that you can write funny 3 1/2 minute bits that would run before G & PG films while you could have others that would be tailored for PG-13 and R.

"It's also very attractive to advertisers as we've seen with the Butterfinger [ad] campaign. So the studio makes its money not from ticket sales but from advertising & product placement. One of the ideas kicked around even had a whole bit talking about the upcoming FOX releases. Under this plan, the studio would release a DVD of the collected shorts once a year or so, which would make them even more money."

Hmmm.... the revival of the short feature before the films? In a lot of theaters, we're getting video projected commercials so why not? I'd rather be entertained by Bart and the gang while trying to sell me a Butterfinger or some other item than another one of those commercials begging me to join the Marines. Hey, maybe they could have an ad with McBain trying to get us to join the Marines...
It should be noted that this is by far not a done deal. A number of ideas are being considered, according to our source, but this one just seemed so interesting, our source thought they just had to share it. Myself, I'm certainly intrigued.
Faithful IGN FilmForce reader "The Dude" just returned from the Sam Goody convention in Las Vegas. You may have seen his previous report about Planet of the Apes (which you can read here) but now he has some news from the convention about a television to film project that's sure to prompt a lot of discussion: The Simpsons.
"The Fox rep. ended his presentation by confirming that there is a Simpsons film in the works!!!!!! He didn't take any questions and quickly fled the scene afterwards, so I'm afraid that's all I know. I haven't heard anything about this yet, so please let me know if I am the first to let you guys know about this!"
Hmm... there have been rumors about a Simpsons movie for years, including an Itchy & Scratchy film that never happened. Considering that the series is riding yet another wave of success, including an extensive line of interactive action figures, this may be the time for a film. The series does well in a lot of international markets so the film should have no problem making money.
The big question is whether or not Groening and company actually want to do a Simpsons feature. Groening did make a statement back in August that he would be interested in making a feature. Appearing at a press conference with the voice actors from the series, Groening said, "It's a little daunting coming up with a half-hour TV episode, let alone a full-length feature. ... No deals have been struck, but we will do one." Figure into the equation that the television series has been running for over 10 years and has more than enough episodes to guarantee it will be run forever in syndication. A film franchise may be the next logical step for the series. Asked in London by the London Daily Express about the future of the series, Groening replied, "That is a bit like asking a marathon runner if he is tired. The series is now in its 10th year. There is a shared vision and little disagreement about the direction of the show." The announcement from the Fox Video representative this past week is the first that's been heard since last August.
No comments from Fox just yet but I'm sure we'll be hearing something pretty soon.
In semi-related news, the Simpson family can be seen up on the really big screen right now... Cyberworld, which includes the 3D-animated "Homer3" segment from the 1995 Halloween episode of The Simpsons, was released into IMAX theatres this past weekend. IGN FilmForce's own Ken Plume was able to take a look at the film; you can check out his review here.
KJB thinks we should just have more (and better) episodes of the series but a movie is just fine.

That's only being going around since '91. Groening consistently says he'd like to make one but can't due to being bound to be almost constantly making the TV series. All the voice actors have clauses in each new contract they do binding them to do a movie if one arises, but as yet it is only ever mentioned as something to do in the future.

At the moment anyways. It's also known as American Pie 3 so could end up either way, maybe eben as 'American Pie 3: American Wedding'. But that would just suck.

Expected to arrive 2003. I believe that's what it means.

The magazine also has lots on big sequals including Matrix, Star Wars, Harry potter and X-men etc. Plus small bits on Shrek 2, lots of other sequals (it's sequal special month) and American Pie 3 or 'American Wedding' as it's called.

Read about this a few weeks back got really excited too, I loved Dumb & Dumber. It's my favourite film hence why I know the whole script.

I think it's gonna turn out a real flop with two young actors taking on such a big role. I mean, how can any actor go in the shoes of the characters of Harry and Lloyd and try and better them? Carey played his part so well as well as all the other main cast.

It better be good.

film magazines always rely on rumours.

I read there was going to be a simpsons movie, and that homer had to save the world from aliens.
