Yeah, thats general concensus wioth MGS fans too. Tanker level on MGS2 = Great. Plant = crummy.

I've only really played the remake of MGS2 and I have to say it the areas seemed short and the controls were very irritating. I got to the bit where you change characters and I'd simply had enough.
The level on the boat in MGS2 is pretty much one/two levels in SC:CT. That's too short, if it had been expanded I think I'd have been more impressed.
At first it was awesome, but after playing MGS3 and then going back, I realized its not all its hyped up to be. Too many cut-scenes, Raiden was a loser, animations were pretty poor and repetitive.... I'll give you Splinter Cell over MGS2.
But MGS1 was revolutionary, and MGS3 was ingenious IMO.

But... but...
Oh, never mind.

Yeah the stories for the MGS games are just so grounded in realism...
and I've seen people with exclamation marks above their heads in real life from being surprised/alerted...
;)
Got very close to the end, but never finished MGS2. Never bought MGS3.
Had the original Splinter Cell and loved it at first, but found it got tedious after a while. Never bothered with any of the follow-ups.
MGS4 is looking fantastic and I could be tempted, but I'll wait and see how it turns out.
It's like trying to play Resident Evil when you much prefer Resident Evil 4.
There's no competition though if you want realism and not something with too many elements harking back to the SNES.
