And about bloody time too. Driving to Birmingham on the M1 is a bloody nightmare. I've done that journey many times when travelling to Old trafford on Match days, and it takes upwards of 4 hours sometimes becasue of the bloody congestion on the motorway!

I don't live in london, but I recon it's a blatant pillaging of car drivers for more money. We have been ragged enough by extortionate petrol prices, and wouldn't mind about the road tax if it was actually spent on the roads, but this is too much.
If they want less congestion, make public transport a realistic option.
> £2billion and not a penny spent in London. Disgusting.
Heh, London seems to be in a world of its own at the moment. I take it you live in London?
How do you feel about the £5 a day congestion charge for driving in central London?

That's what the buses in Nottingham are like, unless you travel at a stupid time, plus the buses get snarled up with the roadworks, tram works, general crap just like car users. Except car users don't have to put up with idiots, whining old people, kids screaming their head off, the **** who has to play the stereo so loud e.t.c. I don't care what it costs - you'll NEVER get me out of my car after the last time I used public transport.
Incidentally, why does the SR swear word blokcer thing stop you using **** but not crap ?

Indeed. I took the (relatively) cheap option - a 12 hour coach journey, so unbelievably cramped sideways in my seat I felt like I was in a third world country.
A bargain at £50 return! :O/

77p is cheap for a 4 mile bus trip. Where I live, £1 will get you anywhere the local bus' serve - a bit more, but they come every 10 minutes, go practically everywhere and basically beat the living poo out of cars for convenience.
In France, Germany et al they simply decide on a 30-40 year plan and get on with it. Our Government just bickers amongst themselves and blames the opposition for previous policies leaving transport in crisis. Intruigingly Germany has 40% motorway provision than us (relative to size) so they obviously understand the need to provide sufficient transport infrastructure to support both the economy and their public's desire for unimpeded travel.
I agree that public transport is poor (underfunded/subsidised/ not readily available) in this country and the incentives to use it outside of a major city are not apparent. However if people aren't prepared to use it, how can it ever become economically viable? That said, I can't believe it costs more to travel on a train from Penzance to Glasgow, than it does to fly to almost any European destination.
That really takes the M25.
