Personally, I'm in favour of it. These guys put their lives on the line day after day, and they deserve a decent salary for doing it. It must really grate that some footballers get more than double their annual salary in a week, all for kicking a ball around for a maximum of three hours a week.

40% may seem high, but considering they'll probably only get half that (if anything), then it's fair play. They always say you should ask for double what you actually want!

I appreciate that a strike may put lives at risk, but that's something held over them by government - and if they don't strike, they'll continue getting screwed.

Now this is the crunch point. This is where I finaly get across what I'm meaning...

There is a long cue of 'already trained and qualified' firemen waiting to join the fire service.

Now that finaly brings that to an end. Sheeesh!

If you're a qualified fireman, chances are you're already in the job. Therefore, following your thinking, you would be sacked.

Meaning that you'd have to wait for other firemen to be trained. Which takes four years. Maybe less, as some are inevitably already partway through training. Either way, you have a mix of inexperienced and unqualified firemen.

So no, I don't support the fireman strike. Just sack the lot of them and watch their places fill up in seconds with 'QUALIFIED FIREMEN'.

If a fireman lost his job it is unlikely that an unqualified person whould step into his place. Duh!

Lol :) Ha, according to Light (whose disappeared) there's no such thing as the political left and right anymore...... I reckon Splendid Mendax is Light with a different name, got that righteous "I am right and will smite the unbeliever even if I say rubbish" quality to them....:P

Socialism/Communism doesn't work mate, accept it.

Back to the topic, I agree they deserve more, but nowhere near 30k. It'll bankrupt the country. My views are somewhere between Wookiee's and IB's. Probably nearer IB's. Except that I reckon they're some of the most honourable people around.

IB - Did the guy who bullied you at school go on to become a fireman? Just a theory.

And someone, can't remember who, said The Times and the Telegraph are notoriously pro-Labour. Er, what?

You cannot just convert the wages...where does that take into account variables like taxation, cost of living e.t.c Oh it doesn't does it....

You have to be fit, reasonably intelligent, and have GCSE's C + above in several subjects. Okay, not the highest of qualifications but a hell of a lot of the country doesn't even measure up to that. Oh yeah, you need that other thing, bravery. Show me a university you can get that in.... not all jobs need degrees you know.

Then don't post....

And have no qualified firefighters for four years while more are trained? Real bright idea. No thanks.

To tell you the truth, my growing hate for everyone in my school has made me laugh at Communism. And now Socialism is annoying me... although I'm not because I'm great.

I hate everyone

Oh yeah, good argument. If you earned 50k+, you would just say you're right wing and you worked hard for it. Hypocrite.

Hi there,

I just want to say that it turns the meaning of professionalism on its head when so-called firemen put lives at risk for money. There are alot of people who are risking their lives and are getting poor pay in this country but they don't go on strike, because they're professionals. These people are clearly not professionals as they havn't used their brains to work out the so-called problem with their pay.

Firemen don't work all that much anyway. Some of them only work three days a week and sit around all day eating biscuits and drinking coffee. Plus, I've heard that some of them have two other jobs on the go so they are getting more money than doctors and other proper professionals. This is just another case of greedy men who have a union to push their case across. I mean, have you ever heard of a union that gets national press about woman getting poor pay? Or more to the point, do you ever here of woman at all going on strike? Even though they are on far worse pay than men. I'm a man before you ask, but It just makes me sick when I here about these things.

I hear that there is a long cue of people waiting to get into the fire service, which is strange because they are supposedly getting poor pay.
So no, I don't support the fireman strike. Just sack the lot of them and watch their places fill up in seconds.
