Is there any need to do that to a woman of that age? What harm could she do to the git who did this to her?
If you must burgle people, why not just take stuff and leave? That's completely unnecessary.
a mans home IS his castle, and if someone broke in to my house, he wouldn't be leaving unless it was on a stretcher
All you'd have to do is say it was self defence. Just make sure you kill the begger first though, that way, he can't argue that point.

If i had a nan id understand more but i do get an idea of how bad it would be.. i would do the same except the body would not have been found

That's one aspect of American law that I agree with 100%.
If someone is in your house uninvited and unwanted, you can do pretty much whatever you want to remove them.
Not the case here. As Tony Martin's case proved, an Englishman's home is no longer his castle. You seemingly can't use any type of force to restrain an intruder without somehow being punished for it.
What are you supposed to do? Say "you're in my house uninvited - please have a seat and the police will be with you shortly"? Then make him a cuppa, break open the biscuits and talk about the recent weather for a couple of hours until the police bother to turn up?
Sorry, I'd just lump him with the nearest heavy/sharp implement. Screw his rights - they are forfeit as soon as he illegally enters my house.

Cheers.
I am mad. I am really mad.
If you imagine that was your Grandma then no-one and no police would stop you from doing what you had to do.
If that ever happened to my Nan then you'd see me on the news cos no matter what, that robber would be found in a shallow grave minus his teeth, eyes, hands and feet.
