I am soon getting a new PC (Acer P4 2.4 Ghz, 512 DDR Ram, Geforce 4 64MB DDR, 16x DVD Drive, 48x/12x/40x CDRW drive, 80 GB 7200 RPM HD etc.). Its a real power house (and it comes with Windows XP Home Edition). Now I have been wanting for a long time to also buy a Next Gen console. I thought at first to get an Xbox, but now that I am rethinking it I think maybe a PS2 is better. Firstly because I own a PS1 and so when selling it its games won't go to waste, secondly 'cause the Xbox is mostly similar to the PC, and lastly because I want the console for jap rpgs (eg. Breath of Fire 5, FFs), western console games (eg. D&D Heroes, LOTR: The two towers, Wizardry on PS2) and beat em ups (eg. Tekken 4) and the PC for Western RPGS (especially D&D, eg. NWN and IWD2, but also eg. Morrorwind) and strategy games (eg. Warcraft3). So what exactly is the PS2's power? The Xbox is compared to a PC, but the PS2's engine is different and runs at 294 MHz (as well as with the auxilliary 38 Mhz PS1 engine for I/O). How does it compare in reality to the Xbox and a PC? I've heard its engine is the equivalent of a 700 Mhz PIII, ie like the Xbox. Is this true? As for the HD I'm not worrying about it (so don't use it as a pro for the XBOX), as shortly the PS2 hard disk will be available for purchase, nor am I worrying about the Broadband access (as I only have normal Internet access, and so instead I will view the PS2's ability to use it as a pro and also should I need it shortly the PS2 will be having a device that allows it Broadband access). The PS2's HD will cost as much as the Xbox DVD kit, so I believe that covers the difference, as the PS2 is DVD ready. Is the PS2 ideal for my console needs? I think so, but first I need to know how well it runs. I've heard its really powerful. Also will the PS2 have a mouse and keyboard available later for surfing the Net? Or is there one already? What do you guys say?
On to the next point, is Nina in Tekken 4 boosted? She is my fave Tekken3 character (for her looks, strength, musclepower and moves). I really want to use her in Tekken 4, but is she still good? I heard Anna has been ditched and the game has been balanced well so has Nina absorbed Anna's moves and is she improved?
Finally is Wizardry for the PS2 good? What about Elder Scrolls 3 for the PC? What are FF11 and 12 all about? Is FF10 any good?
All input will be greatly valued. See you next week mates.
From what you were saying about which games you prefer, and what you would be targeting, it sounded like PS2 is really the only option. Forget specifications for a moment and just concentrate on those games that you are after. If they`re all going to appear on PS2 (especially likely for Japanese RPGs) then you have your answer.
As for Tekken 4 - great game, certainly more balanced as you said, but as for Nina I don`t really know. I never use her really, except for the initial completion of story mode. The only times I`ve used her recently have been in a couple of versus matches where all I did was kick and hope :D I imagine she will have improved though - all the characters have had an upgrade of some kind, more stances, specials, combo alterations etc...
Most of the other games I know little about, but Final Fantasy 10 I can certainly give my opinion on - its unbelieveable! Its fantastic, amazing, superb, brilliant, great, wonderful, imaginative, perfect, faultless, etc...
I played for 60 hours first time through. Now I`m at nearly 120 second time through, thats how much this game has grabbed me. It just seems to keep sucking you in all the time. The battles and stat improvements become addictive, and the plot itself keeps you playing and playing.
If you have a few months to spare, then get FFX :D
