Hi there mates

I am soon getting a new PC (Acer P4 2.4 Ghz, 512 DDR Ram, Geforce 4 64MB DDR, 16x DVD Drive, 48x/12x/40x CDRW drive, 80 GB 7200 RPM HD etc.). Its a real power house (and it comes with Windows XP Home Edition). Now I have been wanting for a long time to also buy a Next Gen console. I thought at first to get an Xbox, but now that I am rethinking it I think maybe a PS2 is better. Firstly because I own a PS1 and so when selling it its games won't go to waste, secondly 'cause the Xbox is mostly similar to the PC, and lastly because I want the console for jap rpgs (eg. Breath of Fire 5, FFs), western console games (eg. D&D Heroes, LOTR: The two towers, Wizardry on PS2) and beat em ups (eg. Tekken 4) and the PC for Western RPGS (especially D&D, eg. NWN and IWD2, but also eg. Morrorwind) and strategy games (eg. Warcraft3). So what exactly is the PS2's power? The Xbox is compared to a PC, but the PS2's engine is different and runs at 294 MHz (as well as with the auxilliary 38 Mhz PS1 engine for I/O). How does it compare in reality to the Xbox and a PC? I've heard its engine is the equivalent of a 700 Mhz PIII, ie like the Xbox. Is this true? As for the HD I'm not worrying about it (so don't use it as a pro for the XBOX), as shortly the PS2 hard disk will be available for purchase, nor am I worrying about the Broadband access (as I only have normal Internet access, and so instead I will view the PS2's ability to use it as a pro and also should I need it shortly the PS2 will be having a device that allows it Broadband access). The PS2's HD will cost as much as the Xbox DVD kit, so I believe that covers the difference, as the PS2 is DVD ready. Is the PS2 ideal for my console needs? I think so, but first I need to know how well it runs. I've heard its really powerful. Also will the PS2 have a mouse and keyboard available later for surfing the Net? Or is there one already? What do you guys say?

On to the next point, is Nina in Tekken 4 boosted? She is my fave Tekken3 character (for her looks, strength, musclepower and moves). I really want to use her in Tekken 4, but is she still good? I heard Anna has been ditched and the game has been balanced well so has Nina absorbed Anna's moves and is she improved?

Finally is Wizardry for the PS2 good? What about Elder Scrolls 3 for the PC? What are FF11 and 12 all about? Is FF10 any good?

All input will be greatly valued. See you next week mates.

Very good points. The PS2 has FFS, Tekkens and tons more, the 'Cube has Super Marios, Zeldas, Pokemon etc. and all the Xbox has is Halo. Its ludicrous. I agree on the stats, there is too much difference in design to truly compare. The Emotion Engine is far more powerful than what its speed indicates. I think its the equivalent of 733MHz P3, meaning its powerful. Its graphics engine is slightly weaker, as is its memory, but the auxiliary PSone Processor helps a lot.

No. PS2 has about the same power. Its engine in relation to A PC is the same as 733 MHz from what I recall. OK, its memory and graphics clock speed are lesser, but PS2 graphics and Xbox graphics of same high quality games is about the same. It has lots of power in relation to the Xbox, the Xbox is only a few steps ahead. Also the machine (Xbox) is a GAMES machine, not a weather predictor or graphics design lab. If all it has are pretty graphics then it isn't really doing its job. Graphics are nice, but alone they do nothing. Many a pretty games have failed miserably 'cause they lack in gameplay. The PS2's graphics and power come threatiningly close, but PS2 loses in terms of not having the broadband connector or HDD. Its graphic however are stuningly good. The Thing looks too disgusting for words, though Timesplitters 2 looks good. Anyway I'm into RPGs, Beat 'em ups and RTSs, not games like Halo or the Thing. So that doesn't draw me in. FFs, Tekken 4, Wizardry, D&D, all of that attracts me.
I don't mean to sound offensive or anything in this post, its just that I think the PS2 is good as well power wise and shouldn't be thought of as weak. Cheers then!

Good points about the games, they really do need something, other than Halo, to call their own. Its a one game console almost, and it really needs to stake out its own share, its own part of the world it can claim to own. Microsoft are clearly getting this as they have started buying as much stuff as possible.

As for power and stats, forget it, not a comparison that is easy to make.

I think the XBOX is an ovarall better console than the PS2. It's got more power, the graphics are better and you don't have those silly little memory cards.
On the other hand, there aren't very many good games out on the XBOX.
Sure, there's Halo and a few others. But most of the good games on XBOX are out on the PS2 as well.
The is ny far the most popular console because even though it has nowhere near as much power as the XBOX, the games are a lot better. For example;
we haven't seen GTA3 on XBOX and we're not going to see Vice City on it either. But the good games on XBOX in the future are Timesplitters 2 and The Thing. These games are out on the PS2 as well.
So I suggest that if Microsoft want to improve the sales of the XBOX, they make some of their own games exclusively to the XBOX.

:p

All hail the PS2! :D And Sony, even though it is one greedy company (not that Microsoft isn't, oh no, MS is a thousand times even more greedy).

Nah, I only want one console. And that is the PS2. Gamecube is good, but PS2 has all the games I want on consoles and has the power to make them smashing. Plus I don't have the dosh to just go buy a second soon after.

Thanks for your advice.

Well it doesn't matter. I will prolly buy it for the PS2 though, as I feel far more comfortable playing FFs with my mates in the lounge on the TV with a Joypad than with my mates in the PC room with the keyboard (keyboard and mouse feel weird with FFs for some reason). FF12 will be a nice game for my PS2. :D

As for Morrorwind, it sounds so cool that I will most certainly buy it....on the PC of course.

Reasonable. 40 gig is 5x bigger than the Xbox's. Its a bloody monopoly, but its a well worth it investment for your PS2.
