Microsoft will not let the Xbox fail and with nearly 70 original titles I can't afford it it either.
So who will win the Xmas battle ? Well ask yourself this even if Sony dropped the price of the now outdated PS2 to £99.99 for Christmas which one would you want to buy ? The Xbox and that's what the majority will be saying too.
Sony have been creaming the profits and keeping the price of the PS2 artificially high for far to long, they soon dropped their plans for the PS3 didn't they because it simply couldn't compete with the Xbox. Nintendo have said that they will not make another console ever so it's a straight fight between Sony and Microsoft and one that I can see Microsoft winning in the end. They have very deep pockets and if you look at the PC market how many PC's run on Windows ? Microsoft have succeeded at everything at everything they do and they will not lose even if they have to drop the price of the Hardware and software still further.
Microsoft have the backing of the Developers and have signed up many exclusives that will never appear on Sony's outdated PS2, they have snapped up Rare which was part owned by Nintendo and who were responsible for many of Nintendo's successful titles so in the long run the Xbox will come out on top.
Independent research has suggested that the Xbox will have sold 35 Million Xbox consoles by 2005, this was based on actual sales figures and was commissioned prior to the price reduction, so what now ? well Microsoft will be on target for sales of around £50 Million Units by 2005 if there's another price reduction at Xmas.

I very much doubt that will happen, and if it does, I can't see Sony producing anything better than the GBA, or something Nintendo can't match. It would also be a huge struggle to obtain developer support as I doubt the success of the PSOne and PS2 would have much affect on their handheld antics. Sony are kings of home entertainment at the moment, and I don't see them trying to concentrate on beating the GBA, which is already selling as well as their own PS2.
That price was a roumor before it went down to £159.99.

The only 2 handhelds worth a note there are the Game Gear and the Poket PS.
Game Gear didn't do too well cause although it was fine as far as games go - it ate through batteries within minutes.
As for the Pocket PS - that wasn't exactly a massive project and did it actually have much support games wise ?
If a company such as Sony seriously wanted to go for it, I think they could produce a decent handheld system that could take on the GB.

Sony's Pocket Playstation - Failure
Wonderswan - Failure
Atari linix - Failure
Game Gear - Failure
Project Jade - Failure
There might be a reason... everyone loves the Gameboy and don't buy the other handheld devices.
Nintendo's Gamecube is making a fortune cause Sony and Microsoft keep trying to rip holes in eachother. Funny World.
X-box is a sorry state of affairs at the moment. PS2 is far more "cool" at the moment, which is the problem X-box face.
Microsoft are intrested in making games for the handheld piece of junk.
> Mantis, there have been three price drops.
No there have been 2 price drops. It started at £300 where it was reduced to £200. No recently it has been dropped to £160.

Well one thing you have to note about the GBA is that it has no competition. I bet that if the likes of Sony released a handheld, Nintendo's profits would fall dramatically.

No, I would kick him and point and laugh. Then I would try and phone Steve Jobs to come and help me kick him. I would also batter his face up with my iPod and keep shouting 'This is how it should be'. Then, with one final evil cackle. I would sit on his face.

As for all the comments on the GameCube. I really can only say that Nintendo are the only games company making a solid profit, so with that in mind, they are the best in the world in the games industry. How can anyone argue with a 72% rise in profit in 2001. That maybe because of the GBA, but who cares. Thats a fact about Nintendo I bet you didn't know.
As for me? I don't care, I play them all and own them all. I have one game on the XBox (having played all the others) and one game on the PS2 (having played near all the others).
Yes, my opinion does count. It counts for me, I have played everything, and to be honest. Gaming is crap currently. Which is why the SNES is still the most played console in my household.

average european XBox owner owning just over 1 game

I doubt it. I only bought mine a couple of weeks ago and already got 3 games :)
