Well...he it is.
Taken from ign.com
"September 20, 2002 - Last week IGNcube reported that Nintendo had cut its stake in UK-based development studio Rare, and that Rare had inked a deal to become a first-party software house for Microsoft. Today Nintendo made its half of the story totally official.
Earlier this morning Nintendo issued a press release stating that it had cut all development ties with Rare. The firm said it had sold its 49-percent share in the former second-party. Nintendo further explained that the decision reflected a restructuring move and a new partnership philosophy.
"Nintendo had the ability to continue its exclusive relationship with Rare, but in looking at the company's recent track record, it became clear that its value to the future of Nintendo would be limited," said Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America. "In other words, we passed on this opportunity for very good business reasons."
The Nintendo release went on to reiterate the fact that Rare software sales accounted for only 9.5-percent of Nintendo sales in fiscal year 2001 and only 1.5-percent in fiscal 2002.
Nintendo stated that it would retain the rights for all original properties including Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong and Star Fox. It made no comment on whether or not Rare would retain the Perfect Dark and Conker's Bad Fur Day licenses.
The company said that game development is ever changing and that the selling of Rare will afford Nintendo more opportunities with other studios. "The disposition of this investment leaves us in a position to become even more aggressive in expanding our development capacity, both internally and externally," MacDougall noted. "Aside from several partnerships already announced over the past year, we are currently in similar talks with several other prospective partners around the world."
Finally, the release noted that though Nintendo's relationship with Rare has come to an end, Nintendo still respects the giant software house. "Although we declined the opportunity to continue our exclusive agreement with Rare, this announcement does not diminish our respect for their work or the past contributions they have made to Nintendo," stated MacDougall.
More as it develops."
BooHooNinties, WayHeyUs. :P
I can't wait for the "Nintendo don't need Rare/Rare are actally pretty crap" noncence that will spill from outraged nintendo fans.

Actually, some of you might be interested to know that Halo has gone over the 2 million mark on units sold now. This puts its sales right up there with the likes of Mario 64 and Gran Turismo.

To someone such as yourself it may look that way, but read a few reviews and you'll see it could very well be a different game (i.e. not in the Mario franchise) with the new plot, and brilliant quests and objectives.
I wouldn't say building your own cars was a first and very imaginative, it's just building on what Gran Turismo and Robot Wars games have done, though it sounds like a great game anyway.

That could show that the Microsoft launch line up was brilliant (which it wasn't, looking at OVERALL sales) or that it lacked variety (which it didn't either). It's a bit of an odd statistic.

Well, I have no evidence of a next generation game to say Rare are a good or bad company for the new consoles, but they're no way as good as they used to be, and under par conversions on the Game Boy Colour prove this. StarFox Adventures won't be any use as to whether or not Rare have still got it or not, as it was a 50% Rare, 50% Nintendo project. Also, Banjo Tooie, Perfect Dark and Conker's Bad Fur Day were all started by those people who left and went to Free Radical Design or Retro Studios. It was later finished by the rest of Rare, and that's why Banjo Tooie never had what Banjo Kazooie had, Perfect Dark's last levels were terrible and Conker's Bad Fur Day was way too short.
Rare aren't the Rare they used to be, and it will be interesting to see how well their first game does when they develop it without help.
Micorosoft must also be doing something right because it is the first console ever to sell 1 million copies of more than 1 launch title. Rare will just enhance what is going to be an amazing 2 years on the Xbox, don't tell me you don't like them now.

I said a 'whole load of games' not 'the whole of the line up' garbe, you should really read my posts properly. Just because Super Mario Sunshine is a sequel, doesn't mean it's unimaginative or lacks innovation. Nintendo realise that Mario has built a great name, and instead of making up new characters, they keep Mario in their new plots and ideas. It's the first next gen Mario game and hasn't been done before, and of course it will be similar to other games - that's what defines a genre! Perhaps it isn't as revolutionary as it used to be, or perhaps it is, but one thing's for sure, it's still got that imagination and innovation.
Blinx looks great, Jet Set Radio Future's is just like Jet Set Radio, isn't it? And I haven't heard anything particularly special about Racing Evoluzione, it just seems like another racing title.
The main structure of this Mario game is the same (jumping and climbing, killing baddies, defeating bosses) but the way Nintendo has adapted that into each game over those ten years is genius, and makes for a new game each time. Anyway, Nintendo must be doing something right as the game sold 650,000 copies in it's first week in Japan alone.
I was disappointed with Conker's Pocket Tales and Perfect Dark on the Game Boy Color, and for the year and a quarter the Game Boy Advance has been released, Rare haven't developed a single game - and have only one for the GameCube, cancelling the rest.
So only one exclusive from Rare was promised in the end anyway, so do Nintendo need them anymore?
Well as Nintendo said, the profits gained from Rare now compared to recent years have been minute, so I think that's your answer.
